| Still Life, 1670, detail by Jean François de Le Motte |
They will find it under the end of the bed,
covered in dust, once we are gone from this earth ---
a box, painted blue & red, my name penned
atop in black, she created when we were dating
Prying open the lid, they’ll find stacks
of correspondence, post-it notes, receipts with
scribble on the back, tickets to memory,
all the letters & cards I ever left laying or sent
Their rubber bands snapping in stiffness, spill
old stamps with post marks from the year we spent
apart, the last before ---
Just the other
day, I explained
how when she
walked through the door,
her white dress
turned the tap on the faucet,
twin streams
guttering in the corners
of my up turned
lips
And while they may receive little
in the way of inheritance, as they unfold crinkling
pages and scan the words, they will understand
waking on cold mornings to naught, yet the taste
of mana prepared by God’s own hands---

Brian, this is beautiful. I love it ;)
I think leaving the legacy of a loving marriage between their parents is worth the weight of both parents in gold. :)
How sweet ~ I think the legacy of loving parents and marriage is the best one to give our children ~ Like the details here of precious remnants including the snapshot in between *smiles*
I think you will leave them what they need the most. The love you shared between you and, are passing on to them.
There is nothing richer you can give them in life than the gift of love because, if they have that, the rest follows, and, you are both doing that in abundance.
What a lovely read this all is.
Brian thank you for coming by...busy busy busy...
the last line and a half did it for me :-)

What a thing to find
To send memories into their mind
But even with space age tech
Will they curl their neck
As they try to read
The hen scratch left at your feed?..lol
Okay -- nosey -- want to know about the year apart. :) :) None of my business!!
This is your most beautiful poem yet. The loving marriage, the sweetness passed for the boys to read one day, and their wives.
Oh, and the dress turning on the faucet -- LOVE that idea.
Again -- a beautiful poem!!

Wow, Brian. This is gorgeous ... dripping with love.
Beautiful:
"when she walked through the door,
her white dress turned the tap on the faucet,
twin streams guttering in the corners
of my up turned lips"
And the ending is perfect. :)
Awwwww, I'm super sentimental so I really appreciate this. :)
This is so vivid I can visualize her in that white dress, I completely get how you feel about each other ... how your children and their children will know too. I love this poem, Brian.
Brian, the stanza is just gorgeous. Simply gorgeous!

A nice and loving tribute to an inheritance more worthy than gold.
Oh, I like this. They will have inherited the capacity for great joy and boundless love.
So sweet, with a touch of mystery, you know. Keepsakes like that are like relics.
Beautiful. And it is only that power, preserved in the hands of abundant light. I know what it feels like to be so fortunate and taste. :) A lovely lesson for whoever stumbles by.
Brian, I read ALL your poetry; and this has to be my #1 favorite of the poems I have read. Trust me, you and your wife will enjoy looking at these things many times before you are ready to leave this earth....and your children will treasure them like rubies after you're gone! This poem REALLY touches me.
"And while they may receive little
in the way of inheritance, as they unfold crinkling
pages and scan the words, they will understand..."
Our legacy, that our children should know that we truly lived, and loved, with all of our hearts. Beautifully written, Brian.
Very nice tribute, really well written. There's no stronger bond than the one you share with family!
Others have used the words legacy, but in truth, there import and meaning will fade as time runs along. But that is O.K.. They have served their purpose in the love you two have shared and made. Blessings.
Wow. Beautiful. Our shoebox stash of crinkled V-mails while in Korea (early fifties). Our children, grand, great and their moms have giggled and blushed at the letters but discover they then and always have been the twinkle (love) in the eyes of that young crew cut GI in a foreign land and his beautiful homecoming queen a world away in frayed pictures black and white pic.

What nice I love especially the last part beauty!
So abSolutely!
I especially like the first two verses...Boxes covered in dust- :)
Yes, catching this mood from others too, not possible in computerland. But we have other things not possible in those days.
I love the noises you've written into the poem. They (paper, elastics, box) add an element of anticipation for the next generation who are rummaging and the audience who are imagining. The noises also accentuate the realism of the event.Fabulous. Thanks.
Man, this is SERIOUS beauty you have lived/penned. And the last lines, well, everyone knows you're good. But...OUTSTANDING what you have conjured for us this day.
And we never have quite enough, always wanting more of whatever. Ever. So, don't go away............
Wonderful, Brian.
nicely done Brian...thanks for this
this is lovely, esp. like the faucet part with the twin streams guttering in the corners of the up turned lips..and what a much better heritage to leave to them than money or houses..i'm really not good with collecting things..ugh...maybe should think about changing this..
they love that you love each other.
The painful treasures of the impoverished poet, leaving 'naught' but a richness of soul behind!!! Nice
It's hard to imagine a lovelier inheritance. Wonderful!
Really nice piece. Love the tender reminiscence and reflection and the neat little extras, like the smell, the turning on the faucet with the dress and the snapping rubberbands. excellent write. Thanks
I've gone all emotional now. Loved this, Brian. Has to be the new No.1.
This is top stuff in my book - and from a prompt which I thought particularly difficult. I was particularly grabbed by the final couplet.
nice -you have made a thing of beauty with these scattered bits - the last line really gathers in your ideas.
Love and affection, money can't buy. Leave these to them by way of principles to guide them and they treasure for life
Hank
leaving them with treasures some will never know...how sweet that all of that is saved! beautifully written....
What an absolutely beautiful post!

Lovely poem - the tickets to memory is so great, and of course the white dress turning on faucet and the close. Very lovely. k.
You ae so right Dear Brian, treasures to behold, they are indeed
Brian this is gorgeous. I love the faucets of drool...wish I still inspired that. LoL
Awww, that's a wonderful inheritance...showing your children how to love and cherish.
So caught up in this..we are our words...beautiful reminder, and your inner vision will remain...
Ok, you made me cry, love. My Brian Box holds many special memories of our first years together and I love peeking in and sharing tidbits of those moments with our boys. I pray they see the love we share and learn how to nuture and honor that love when God places that special girl in their lives.
All about memories and times so precious. Lovely poem!
Hugs

This is sweet and beautiful. It warmed my heart. Not the typical love poem, but so full of love.
Beautiful love poem, Brian, as yours always are--love the white dress turning on the faucets of desire. We all have those boxes, physical or mental, and they sustain us, and are indeed the legacy love leaves behind.
Lovely words, and ‘legacy’ was the first one that came to my mind; I see I was not alone! This is a richly descriptive poem that paints the perfect word picture.
Time is very precious... so what we leave behind matters. To leave so much love and laughter is truly an awesome gift.
What is sad is how few of these time-capsules will be created in the future as we move toward text messages and email. It's not just the words, which might be kept. It's the crinkle of the paper.
So very romantic and beautiful!
Beautifully written, treasured but shared love. I'm with Janie, my first thoughts were a want to know about the year apart.
I have just such a box, and I treasure it.
One day, I hope my kids will, too.
=)
The best legacy of all!
Those memories will be VERY cherished by your boys, I promise. I am blessed to have a similar box from my parents and from a couple that were like grandparents to me. They bring smiles every time I open them.
Loved this one. (And still hoping you have a long lost brother to fix up with my sister ;-)

mana prepared by God's own hands...love that. way to give credit to whome credit is always due. love the quiet humility in this one, bri.
yep i have a box like this... beautiful write Brian..x
Beautiful. A testament to their parents love...and that enduring is WORTH it...it will bring them GREAT satisfaction...

the legacy of love ; well expressed brian . wordwand
I love "tickets to memory"...
Brian,
This is beautiful. Tess took my favorite words, "tickets to memory."
Ah...you are a collector of the most valuable items in existence!
I just wanted you to know that I. Am. Working. Again.
I may not have time to comment but always enjoy stopping by your blog! xxoo
oOo...utterly romantic, brian with a sweet lryical bent.
I like the way you've made it current with the "just the other day" stanza. Really something special.
Dear Brian, this one is beautiful - I have a box of letters, love letters and memorabilia and I have often wondered whether one day, when I am gone, there will be anyone in the future sitting down reading it all and think off me.;))
Will it be family or strangers...
Have a great Monday, here is Tuesday morning already.;))
xoxo
A life in letters and poems, what is there that would top such an inheritance?
A poet of love... it IS the little things.
aww...that made me cry. :)
the taste of manna... yes. this is marriage. this God-given bread of heaven.
Spectacularly beautiful!
This is so neat ... I can feel it ... I have seen it in "normal" families ... I would love to have something like that ... even just to pass on to my kids ... hard to find the right words, B ... very moving read for me ...
Truly beautiful.
Truly wonderful words:
Just the other day, I explained
how when she walked through the door,
her white dress turned the tap on the faucet,
twin streams guttering in the corners
of my up turned lips
Anna :o]
Ooo, that's lovely - the image of her catching the tap with her dress...
Very gentle poem - I'm gonna look around and see what I can leave behind for people...
This is beautiful, Brian. Personal effects are so much more sentimental as an inheritance.

Lovely. You made this insomniac smile. I have a box like that, too. Notes and mementos. There have been times I wish I could have done that magicians trick and just pulled the paper table cloth off the restaurant table to take with me, cutting out the little pictures he drew for me while we waited for pasta and our love spilled over onto the table.

Post A-Z Road trip!
Brian...I am erasing all but the writing and if they discover it when i am gone that is god and if they discover it and delete it that will be good as well. I, in either case will no longer have need of it.
Love, romance, remembrance and memories all packed in letters...beautiful.
While it was hard, I enjoyed going through all the stuff my mom left. So many treasures found.
Love your words as usual.
So good to be able to read treasured letters and cards from the past. I suppose our blogs will hold the same feelings for those who read them when we are gone if we choose to leave them.
Brilliant. I think I way prefer your take on it. My story found doubt in the beautiful legacy, yours solidified it. Awesome read, well done!
Oh, Brian, this is so endearing! What beautiful visuals your words evoke. I'm stunned.
Those keepsakes are more precious than any precious metals or gems, Brian.
It's good to have that box of letters and memories. I have some from my parents and have made my own but don't know what will happen to all of it. Maybe it will just be dust in some landfill.
This is so beautiful and touching Brian and I agree with those who say, parents who love each other are giving their kids something worth more than anything they could leave them would be worth ... a really lovely write ...

So beautiful, hats off to you.
This was absolutely beautiful! Touching and beautiful!
This was absolutely beautiful! Touching and beautiful!
This left me breathless and thankful for the love of my husband. He may never pen a poem as magnificent as this, but he loves me so well.
Thank you Brian. Inspiring words you stitched together. Beautiful picture.
I like this immensely.
Bravo!
