we eat pizza off paper plates
on the avenue of the open air mall
in Charlottesville
which smells better than it tastes,
but that is not the point, neither
the wrought iron table with a bit of a wobble,
a man and his son on the corner, picking banjo
& playing violin
nor the bricks that form broken symmetry
we crossed to this point, beautiful it is though
sun glows through a few stray hairs
dancing with the afternoon breeze, atop your head
in your eyes i see a man skipping, out of place
wearing a suit, sunglasses, shoulder length hair
holding hands with his purple dressed daughter
smiling
& free
your lips damp with mountain dew,
a small dimple where the straw rests
along the lower one, the arc of your ear
round the shadow depth of its crease,
freckles reappear as seasons turn---
if you ask me what we are talking
about, i won't
be able to tell
i'll say 'blackberry jam'
& after you laugh, but before you can ask
i'll add, 'the taste of this moment'
not that you need to understand,
perhaps love tastes different
for each of us,
yet never like chicken,
that is reserved for everything else.

that made me laugh - never like chicken, no, but often like blackberry jam and sunshine, and laughter. I like this poem!
Superb. Funny and touching by turns.
And then this:
& after you laugh, but before you can ask
i'll add, 'the taste of this moment'
A lovely moment around which the rest could crystallise.
Never like chicken. I'm printing this one. To remind me that there is love and sunshine and blackberrries.
if you ask me what we are talking
about, i won't
be able to tell
That's the beauty of love. Liked this a lot, Brian, it's gone up to No.1.
Like this a lot. Again another great snapshot of life and love. The last few lines are just awesome -- chicken having that modern other meaning of cowardice.
The taste of this moment...how you capture this scene and moment so vividly. For me, its spicy food ~
Happy day Brian ~
you are right, love never tastes like chicken. For me, love tastes like risotto cooked with champagne, sprinkled with a little parmesan cheese. I liked this one a lot.
I would not ask what you mean but i would savor the look on your face as you understood it for yourself.
Oh those in depth observations of yours. Always so poetic and real.
this one had a delicious real-life flavour to it and, no, it wasn't chicken. :)
So vivid, Brian. I love how even though you are at an open air mall in Charlottsville with all the eclectic and interesting sights to take in you are focused on the beauty of your wife. Priceless!
You've got the sensual and the mundane mixed together. You notice so many little things and make of them things of import. You've the artists eye with words Brian.
Great sense of observation and appreciation. It cannot be anything else to come up with this. Chicken and love, a combination compatible with feelings. You said so in your verse. Great write Brian!

Beautiful, Brian. Love comes in many forms and yes, tastes different to each of us. That's the joy.
Following Chantel's lead. I needed to read this this morning...

Yet never like chicken...still smirking, poet and biting my tongue ;) Love it...and now I'm thirsty...for Mountain Dew of course.
Man, you captured some emotion with this one. Lovely.
Laughter spreading throughout the land with your delicious sensual images...through blogger land at least. Thanks for love spread your way.

a lovely funny poem Brian , for me I love roast chiken.I’d be delighted to get your visit and comment on my new poem.take care and have fun.
How sweet! Blackberry jam moments are not to be missed. May Day! May Day! :-)
Fun and vivid.
like the reflection part
and yet quite grounded!
I love blackberry everything, especially love. Great poem, Brian.
sounds like fun!
Love this poem and the shared language of love.
You always bring me unexpected laughter, Brian. Love the last verse especially. :-)
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful moment!
Hugs

Blackberry, Blueberry, Bayberry--WAIT! Well, where love is involved, all are berry-berry GOOD!
And I have spent a better part of several days roaming that mall, drinking my caffeine drug, and chatting with friends--yup! MORE fond memories, Mr B!
LOVE and PEACE!
i like this much..def. has the feeling of a time-freeze- moment, filled with the texture of feeling, scent, touch while the world around continues in their usual speed and that makes it double special...and def. love it when such moments have a specific taste that sets them apart from everything else.. nice
What a wonderful May Day poem.
Life and love should always be like Blackberry Jam... messy, sweet and filled with pieces of good fruit.
Just love this...
I wondered where you were going with the title. Love it! What a perfect fit. You have such a skill of capturing a moment.
haha for a moment there
I thought you were going to try and have me ban chicken from my lair
But such a taste is for everything else indeed
And not for love, maybe greed
But I'll take my chicken and eat it too
That way both can come due
So nicely random in describing the place and moment, even when you say blackberry jam and leave that taste in the readers mouth for the entire length of a line break, and you don't let the reader off the hook, you gently pull them to a slight explanation and the longer explanation that honors the moment as well. But I keep going back to the blackberry jam.
Wow...never like chicken!
This was one of my favorites I think - so simple, yet so well said.
I do believe that I have missed reading your work. Indeed I do. The warmth and generosity of feelings in this poem are just spectacular. This is a poem f great comfort ... thus it brought to me many smiles today, smiles that are happily worn. ;) Liz
This one made me melt ....
I love blackberry jam:) nice moment Brian.)
"perhaps love tastes different for each of us..." Love that.
Great imagery!
(You might want to check out lascauxreview.com. They are a new journal open for submissions.)
Tastes and smells and sounds and feels different for each of us, I'm sure.
(I love Charlottesville, by the way - spent a few good years there in grad school.
ah, great ending. The sentiment on love and the clever use of the old tastes like chicken bit. Very nicely done. And I know just what you mean, mall food typically smells better than it tastes, or at least that's been my experience. Thanks
Wonderful capture of love and life in a moment.
and the closing lines are pure brilliance. Great work here.
Ah, this made me smile!
Uplifting and fun. Wish I could have spent a few moments there. Raspberry for me.
yes, a big smile.... you are so good at writing about love, the real, true love that we live in our lives, the kind that matters.
you take a moment that so many would think of as ordinary and turn it into an extraordinary poem. that is magic.
Love this poem! ♥ It's superb!
oh - a poem with a taste of my favorite blackberry jam - absolutely lovely *may day smile to you*
:) love the intimacy in this...and 'the taste of this moment' is the best. :)
very clever... everything tastes like chicken but not love..
Sweet, endearing, and funny. At Sandfest we had an entry of an alligator with a mans legs sticking out of his mouth. The name of the sculpture was "tastes like chicken". Just had to share - it should be reserved for everything else!
I haven't see you post one that looked so deeply at its subject with such love in quite a while, Brian. You wear it well, brother.
As I said, the deep focus look into your subject, from the taste of the pizza to the shadows, is extemely arresting.
I'm left like Oliver Twist... I want more (like this), please, sir!

Brian, I wasn't sure where you were going with the title, but I loved how you ended. Love never tastes like chicken, that is for sure, though I do love the taste of chicken cooked on my Traeger! I particularly liked the image of the wrought iron table that wobbles. They always do wobble, don't they? Peace, Linda
A moment worth savoring, when conversation happens without speaking, leaving room in the mouth for the taste of blackberry jam (seedless, of course).
Something about this one just made me smile Brian, I love the line with freckles! :)
Brian loved your words filled with stops and goes of living ~ love flashes through our days on bits & pieces ~ like blackberry jam! :) - your writing left me in smiles!
BlackBerry jam.....the taste of this moment. I really loved this Brian. The small details, the little looks, a crinkled nose, a smile....are the things we love and cherish.
Indeed, not everything "tastes like chicken." You have a wonderful (and very unique) way of expressing your thoughts, your feelings. How lucky the woman whose
words spin unheard, but whose freckles you live for! Nice one Brian!
What you mean everything doesn't taste like chicken? Wow Bri! Haha a very endearing snapshot into an evening with a twist. Brilliantly placed as usual my friend. Ive missed your serenity x
Love like this can slip away without warning, keeping the 'taste' of it is vital to a relationship -- and often hard to do... nice stuff Brian...
I loved this my brother. It captures a moment, and a place beautifully. I am envious at the time and place that inspired this, but more n-v-s of your writing talent. Big ups to you!
Brian, I LOVE your poetry! Always a surprise. Sometimes hard, sometimes funny, always deep and taking me where I didn't expect to go. Love how you describe "love" here. So sweetly tender and bubbling with endearing humor.
This is great! A perfectly captured moment.
LOVE "taste of this moment."

Some moments are made to get lost in...personally I hate blackberry jam, but the metaphor is sweet, and doesn't have those annoying little seeds. Love it, bri.
Never the chicken...oh that delightful generic description of taste. This poem made me smile. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
I love what you notice. This reminds me of some of the spaced out conversations I like to have with my husband when he's falling asleep but won't admit it.
Jam just goes so well with sunshine.
"your lips damp with mountain dew,
a small dimple where the straw rests
along the lower one, the arc of your ear round the shadow depth of its crease, freckles reappear as seasons turn---"
Hi! Brian...
What a very descriptive, well-written poem...I like how you describe the moment [that I quoted from your poem] without a name [being mentioned,] but yet we the readers...know who you are describing so very well...too! [Or do we?!]
Tks, for sharing the image too...it compliment your poetic words...as usual!
deedee ;-D
Oh I really like this, blackberry jam and the moment, and the chicken and all the other ingredients that make this a really clever creation. Truly excellent stuff.
I always admire your idea's when writing poetry.
Cool way of thinking/writing ;)
Thanks
S.
Sensational with a lot of flavor :)
sensational with a lot of flavor nice
Sensational with a lot of flavor :)
Just love this! :)
love the image of the skipper in the suit :D - i ve been in close contact with some fowl old birds over the years and some of them did leave a whiff of kentucky fried wings when they left the room... the way they tasted... a bad Maccy D's - lol - great stuff brian... a memorable ending for sure
So nice...and on such a good theme! Sometimes love can just stop you in your tracks like...you forget everything...I'm glad I've experienced it! Loved the close- chicken is reserved for everything else...great job
'the taste of this moment' - What a lovely sentiment. The blackberry jam line made me smile, too. Good feelings all around :)
Another great job....and like everyone else, I'm loving "never like chicken" :)

"If you ask me what we're talking about, I won't be able to tell"
Hey...that has been my life!
Love it, Brian. And, I suppose you are aware that me and Sherry make mean blackberry jam??
Vivid images - love the humour
This is so great, Brian!! First I want a couch like that! Second I love how you describe her and the humorous bit in the end!! I really enjoyed this, just the light heart-ed fun I needed thank you, Brian!
Loved it ...kind of that comfortable appreciative moment that only a couple that has been together ions I think can understand ....and boy do I understand LOL thank you x x x
This sings. Love the rhythm and the words spoken and not.
A fantastic capture of the moment. Lasting and memorable to us all who have shared in a similar experience and can relate. I enjoy the lightheartedness. The words seemed to lift the worries of the days, watch them fly away like birds. That was almost a poem in itself :P
Brian, very touching. Seemed to be whimsical at first, but settled into a groove of capturing the perfect moment. "The taste of this moment." Aaaaaaaah. You are such a romantic, Amy

your poetry speaks to me, and look, SO many others too!

This is the best kind of love poem, it's uncomplicated. No over indulgence with heavy handed words. And as someone else has said, it's what you notice... nice poem!
This is so sweet. I'm glad you tasted the moment. Hope we all do, when we have them. It's almost summer and love is in the air.
Your poetry is always so immediate and vivid.
Wonderful capture of the eternals of love in a single moment of life. The imagery presented all other senses aroused are done perfectly.
You are sweet my love! And the way you describe the taste of love as blackberry jam (unique and special)...and that it's not chicken like everything else! :)
I enjoyed our weekend long date and trip to C'vill so much...even our many laughs in "that store you got sucked into". Fun memories and sweet special time together....love ya!
i so love this - it's a love poem - I need to read more of these!
I love how you write about what you see....i might have to keep this one bookmarked!
ps- forgot to say my fave line
the taste of this moment...sweet!!!
Beautiful and how wonderful your wife supports you on your blog!
nothing gets by you beautiful
You're a master of detail, Brian. This was great.
yes! blackberry jam is the taste of this moment - i hadn't realized till you spelled it out here {smiles}
You had me at pizza! haha
lol I love this Brian! :)
Chicken is my favorite, and good to see it being used here as a recipe for a such an awesome poem. :)
Another of your wonderful "taste of the moment" poems, Brian. You are really making me miss C'ville!
I have some sons with sunny freckles..they get them from their mom. ha. You almost forget about them throught the cold months and then they reappear and make you smile. :)
Love is him making sure that her car is full of gas, is her leaving him the last piece of pizza with pepperoni on it, is in the small seemingly unimportant details - like seeing the dimple on her lip from a straw, or living in the moment in her presence and forgetting what you're talking about. This piece has captured that absolutely beautiful truth.
your posts always have the strength of a well practiced writer...
what a beauty of an ending! ;-)
"perhaps love tastes different
for each of us,
yet never like chicken,
that is reserved for everything else"
Beautiful!
"not that you need to understand,
perhaps love tastes different
for each of us"....love this..reading this made me smile and miss visiting even more than I already did. :)
Hope all is well with you and yours Brian. Glad you are still writing and sharing your words. XXOO
Another example of how skillful you are at capturing details, sharing a moment of time and making a point...all in one poem. You amaze me.
... the taste of this moment... Goes straight to my heart! Magnificent!
From beginning to end I knew what you meant.. another heart and cinematic unrolling. Beautiful.
This is a side of you Brian, I had not caught until this poem. You are sweet! I mean sweet in the nicest...male way. The way your love just leaps quietly...for the moment and makes its way into the reader's heart. And it's not the taste of common chicken...blueberry jam it is or something else...but I felt that!! Yay, Brian...:))
I hate when the pizza taste better than it smells. I like the chair/couch in your photo. and as always you never disappoint with keeping it real in your writing.
http://leah-jamielynn.typepad.com
Vivid and immediate in texture taste and smell you always seem to come up with poems that you can live through with feelings and senses
You do such a great job with your descriptions. Loved it!
This is very sweet and loving . I like your poet's eyes ...seeing the sunset through a few stray hairs ...this is the kind of perception that doesn't miss anything..which is not always a good thing for other mere mortals:)
I love the serendipity querkiness of this - such a visually (and tasty) appealing poem.
As I've come to expect here, another beautiful poem full of evocative and clearly authentic feelings. Sensitive, without a trace of sentimentality. Brilliant job Brian.
Being for there for the other is often the most important thing, something I often find the hardest thing to do. This captures that sensitivity to time and our inhabiting it where we can share the simplest things and have them make sense just as they are, neither more nor less. A very tender, strangely powerful poem on the joy of the moment.
Love and more love, and such a relaxed poem that it just flows through you...no heaviness about it...
Like it a lot, Brian.
Lady Nyo
fantastic imagery captured in this moment of contentment and intimacy. well done!
"which smells better than it tastes" ... Isn't that always the way? Yet we keep eating junk anyway. Man, are we rough on our bodies.
rosemarymint.wordpress.com
You do write the best love poems.
And this was on of the best of your best, for me.
=)
A lovely snapshot of a moment. Interesting use of enjambment.
My favorite bit is here:
if you ask me what we are talking
about, i won't
be able to tell
i'll say 'blackberry jam'
& after you laugh, but before you can ask
i'll add, 'the taste of this moment'
not that you need to understand,
perhaps love tastes different
for each of us
The last line is cute and brings us back to the surface, but I also wonder how the poem would read without it.
This one touched me deeply, Brian,
for in those moments of mundane
bliss when the husband, lover,
and poet is both experiencing
and cataloging everything, you
seem to fine tune every second;
your verbosity and compassion
seem endless.
and the taste of that moment you captured is pretty sweet-- nice write, my friend.
Very sweet ... cute ... cheeky ... in a lovely way!
{smile}
"the taste of this moment"
we need to do that more often, don't we? pay attention... taste the moment.
wonderful write, bri!
You had 123 comments when I arrived to foil that perfect count. :)
I love this one. It definitely doesn't taste like chicken. More like the warmth of the blackberry jam that you mention. Very sensual; I can see, taste, smell, and feel everything, and even hear the conversation and the laughter.
You are so effectively descriptive...its beautiful!!
Peace to you
LOL. So, let me see if I've got this... If I kiss someone and they taste like chicken, we should just be friends? And, if I find the guy that tastes like champagne, strawberries, or ______, then he's definitely THE one? Sounds like an easy enough way to figure things out! :P smiles...
This is such a wonderful capture of being fully immersed and enjoying the moment! Love the blackberry jam line (reminds me of one of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's lines) contrasted with chicken (which reminds me why I always seem to be looking for a good chicken recipe, ha ha!). Such a sweet scene! (and that's a pretty cool looking-- mosaic couch, is it?)
I do think love tastes different for each of us...I will take mine pizza-flavored, please. There could be a whole poem written on the tastes of love!
Sorry I am late commenting. I have had a busy few days. Catching up with all my favorite people now!
Oh, sweet! Never like chicken--ha! but
i'll say blackberry jam
& after you laugh, but before you can ask
i'll add, 'the taste of this moment'
that is where you prove you are a master.
Brian, this vividly captured moment in love leaves me with a smile on my face that is as much chicken chuckle as is blackberry jam heart-melting makes me want to say "Awwwww" charm. You are so good at this.
fabulous catpure of a moment in time. Love tastes different for each of us... and yet you evoke it so well in these words.
Sigh--- You just keep getting better.
"Chicken" made me smile.
jj
this was amusing friend, I am not a lover of chicken but dont mind it now and again...
Came for a little bit of cheer. I like this much. Thanks. :)
Those special moments, good to hold them close and keep them in your mind.
