Where the canal runs through the city
under bridges
under passes
people walking
its brown water meanders by them
a man, all hair & beard, worse for wear
plays a guitar, with one broken string
his companion twirls a hula hoop
round n
round n
round her curves
barefeet on the sidewalk
Lost my mind, anything helps,
torn cardboard in the battered case reads
regardless, his music
her dance
they are
rain drops making rainbows
on an otherwise sunny day.

You are good at finding the beauty, Brian. Thanks for helping us see it, too.
=)
You see beauty and wonder where I tend all too often to turn my head and look away. I have so much to learn.
The very simple way this is written seems to reinforce the sadness, and the beauty of broken things...and people. The division between 'us' and 'them' always disappears in your work, brian---never more so than here.
Wow! I just love the rhythm and the message of this piece. I can see this.
What a great post to start my blog-browse today! Thanks Brian. I felt like I was there.
Happy Weekend, G
PS: Did you receive your prize yet? Hope you are enjoying it!
Yes I think is beautiful really beautiful Brian:)
You set the scene so vividly, Brian... love the hula hoop... it's always refreshing to see people like that, as your ending states.
The hula hoop
Didn't droop
As you gawked away
At their display
A lost mind
May at least help unwind
But a sad state
To which you help all relate
And the beauty you share through your words goes round n round n round ....
The homeless and the deprived are there. We just didn't see or care. But they can still hula. Great take Brian!

Painting pictures again in my mind.
The pure essence of this is so beautiful my love. You have such a way of opening our eyes to the beauty of each others' story. Everyone has a story - a story that is worth sharing, worth listening to....and may very well change our outlook.
It's true, there is beauty everywhere, even in the most unlikely of places. It's hard sometimes to put our frustration in our pockets and look without that bias.
:)
Have a wonderful weekend.
Love that last line, really a good one. Such a wonderful way you poeticized this observation into such a neat little scene. Very nice. Thanks
i like raindrops making rainbows....your words take to other places....i like that!
happpy friday to you my friend
Beautiful. The entire scene played out perfectly. Hoping all is well with you and yours....
How do you manage to make a simple scene so enchanting?
Have a good weekend Brian. I know whatever you do is food for your poetry.
barefeet on the sidewalk grounded this home for me. until then, you gifted us with sights and sounds, but then i got to feel the scene through those bare feet. it's a simple and pleasurable experience to slide in there. and what a close. great piece.
Yes, you have a way of finding the beauty in most everything. The sadness of her dancing barefoot almost sounds romantic, if it wasn't so sad.
How many times can one keep saying the same thing about your writing!~!
Amazing! LOL There, I said it again. :)
You really see the wonder in the smallest details Brian, I love reading what you write. The "round n round" really sticks with me! :)
Lost my mind, anything helps... You make it sound romantic. I can't find it so when I'm walking to work and passing them by. I've had a grounds position open for weeks. How much mind does it take to mow the grass?
nice..often those with the broken strings make the most beautiful music...love that you saw rainbows where others would only see rain..
I think though you remind us that there is no separation between us/them only a spectrum of loss. Who among us is not broken and when pressed would not cry that we are lost? Glorious, thank you.
I think the hula hoop is a good symbol for the circle of life. Music can be made with a guitar, even with a missing string. "Raindrops making rainbows" - I like it. A thoughtful write, Brian.
ah...your art is beautiful
A lovely vignette. Ha.. loved the sign.I'm going to make one of those:) Charming poem.
I was wondering about your comment about the broken string in the guitar in my melody post. Now that I am reading this post, I now understand the perspective. Simple yet beautiful scene...and I like the round n round of the hula hoop.
My hippie heart adores this poem. :)
Raindrops making rainbows. And her barefoot hula dance! Love, love, love.
"his companion twirls a hula hoop

I actually wrote a poem longer than three lines. You'll be amazed.

Hi! Brian...
All I can say is your [poetic] words are precise and straight to the point as you sum up [in your poetry] a very "sad," but common scene in this our society.
Tks, for sharing the image too!
deedee ;-/
Oh Mr. Brian...you are great!!!
You always 'wow' me with your grand rhythm and prose.
God bless ya and have a fantastic weekend Man!!! :o)
Oops! I hope that you have a nice week-end too!
deedee :-P
Sounds like a unique moment. I like the way you formatted this. Like a hula hoop to me.
Once again nicely done, Brian. You can describe a scene perfectly.

some of the best musicians are undiscovered. Hope they make enough to buy her some shoes.
You made a painting out of this post... Or a short movie on my mind...

Have mercy, but there's beauty there.
Simply beautiful.
What are you guys up to tonight? We are having family night, and the kids are having a costume contest. They are maniacs.

You have such a way of painting urban landscapes Brian and making them so poignant.
Brian, I have always loved people who performed with abandon on the street. These two are happy with what they are doing, and the rainbow they created? I could see it though your words. We have buskers in Madison, and they bring broad grins to my face, every time... thanks, friend. Amy

I've said this before to you Brian and I'm going to say it again. I love the way you see the world through not only your eyes but with your heart and soul. I am much like you & I like to see the beauty that lies between the lines..because there is so much of it that surrounds us...we need only look!!!
Great images. Thanks you.
Lovely lyrical verse, Brian. In the brokenness there's beauty still.
Concluding lines
ain drops making rainbows
on an otherwise sunny day...
Awesome
n than under bridges, under passes people walking...
Simple but extremely powerful :D
Loved it Brian !!!
its full of life and beauty...I think you can find it at all odd scenes of life.
You paint a vivd scene, which I found lyrical, almost romantic, but acknowledging the grittiness of the reality. Quite an achievement!
Agree with David - though the hula hoop has a very lyrical feel to begin with - the guy lost his mind, perhaps, but not an ability to set a scene. k.
You create such vivid images for me.
Quite the experience,
Hugs

It is the little things, isn't it, the details that provide the rainbow colors of our days. We just have to be intentional about looking!
Great visual images as well as an enjoyable read.
Rainbows and silver linings abound. Lovely poem, Brian.
paraphrasing, "lost my mind making rainbows on a sunny day" -
this leaves me so calm in such a good way, thank you brian ;-)
What a wonderful image you have created here! (Although I know you didn't create it; you just recorded it in words. Still wonderful!)
Beautifully written, your words painted a picture I doubt I'd ever see with my eyes... lesson learned.
Congrats on POTW!
beautiful. congrats on another POTW.

You see beyond the obvious to what really matters. Beautiful. Congrats on the POTW!
Lost my [fill in the blank], anything helps
Brilliant line, Brian!
Congrats on POTW!
Always seeing the magic in common every day things.
Congrats on the POTW! So well deserved!
it is the eye of a master to see things some people never manage to see, quite brilliant.
nice
Lost my mind, anything helps--yes, I get that.
