55 - Star Eyed Blind
we built a rickety rocket ship
from boards out back dad's shop
and banged nails unbent---
piled in with our
precious things, comic books
& napkin wrapped cookies,
dreaming we'd truly lift off,
star eyed blind---
back when anything could happen,
afternoons & weekends,
for no other reason than we believed
it would & did.
55 words-that's all you get...tell a story then tell g-man. Thursday nites @ 8 pm.
i am posting early. my boys are out of school on break the second part of this week so i am doing a bit more playing than usual and may not be as quick to respond to comments the next couple days.

Oh I remember those days of backyard rocket ships. Some of ours actually took off. :-)
That "took me back" with only a few words. Nice, very nice.
it's so good to have those memories isn't it? ... enjoy your time with the boys Brian :-)
I remember those days ~
Enjoy your time with your kids ~
Thanks for the memory!
It is tough work banging out those old nails- We built many things from them...Got a lot of hours of pleasure and use from those projects- some floor boards still remain in our pine tree....
...ah to dream indeed.
A really graceful painting of the good old days. You have re-captured that time for me.
Oh yah the tree forts of memories, I loved climbing trees, had a bucket at the bottom that Mom filled with cookies so I could stay up there all day reading books...thanks for the trip.
wow...brought back childhood in a whoosh and that was amazing since my childhood is light years away

Nostalgic! Have a great time with your kids!
The sweet memories of summers past captured in so few words. You've a deft hand Brian
I remember that. things did if you only believed. Then one day they didn't. It's called growing up. Great poem.
Nice one. I crave to be taken back to those years. I know that they have flown off. Have a nice time with kids.
Nice Brian , enjoy your kids:))
oh my...this was sweet and oh so true...and we believed
Ahh yes flying to the moon
Like in some cartoon
Was all grand to make come true in our minds eye
Wonder how many literally tried to make it fly
Then fell down
And were left with a boo boo and a frown..haha
Hope you ride the rocket you built...enjoy playing.
I have to be honest about the 2 cardinals and the finch. It is two photos combined with a misty filter added. So while it has been photoshopped, I still like the mood.
Aah, those wonderful summer days of friendship and trust that anything was possible... You've captured it so well, Brian.
Yes we did believe and guess what..I still do!!
Hugs

I loved playing Rocket Ship at my aunts house. Those were the days!
Enjoy the time playing with your boys.. :)
Those truly were the days, Brian!
Have a blast with your sons!
I like these carefree memories. How much fun summer days were when we spent the entire day dreaming and playing outside. Hope our boys will enjoy summer days like this as well.
Childhood adventures, enjoy them again with your boys :-)
Brian, a splendid return to those days of youth. So much said in 55. Thanks
Playing is magic! Go on, play away!
Ours were always ships to sail us across the ocean.
Nice 55
what a great stroll down memory lane. loved it and the image too!
I'm so glad I've subscribed here, really enjoying your blog Brian. Always something far from ordinary here.
I loved days like this - where the only ticket required was imagination.
And may you build many more, bri, because I think you're in the same business, just now you use words. Have fun with the boys--way more important than anything else could be.
Wonderful! I love "star eyed blind." Ever see the Sponge Bob episode called "Imagination?" They turn a box into everything!
Hello =) I have given you a blog award! Come get it here: http://diamondsmadeofglass.blogspot.com/2012/02/versatile-blogger-award.html
The days when children used their imagination instead of playing video games are greatly missed. Not sure if they will ever know how lucky we were to have such fun days.
Oh well I guess it's call progress, just the wrong kind of progress.
Glad to know that you will pass this on to your boys.
God bless.
I shot down 30 Japanese Zeros (Three-time ACE!) behind our horse barn sitting on the hay tiller--operating it with levers which raised and lowered the whole piece of hardware
BEEEEEAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR here comes the Flying Tiger steveroni--grin!
Hey Brian--this from another blog, your comment: ".i am fairly direct by nature...but over time...i have tempered this..."
BOY, THAT'S a good thing!!! HAHAHA!
Napkin wrapped cookies... I want one!
ah i wanna go back there...now wait..think i just found some crumbs of that wrapped cookies...and they still smell of machine oil...smiles
Very fun.
It makes me long nostalgically for the simpler days of childhood. I still have fun doing 'fantasy play' with my own kids, but the opportunities are fewer than I'd like.
Great write, reminds me of my childhood. My brothers, myself, and the neighborhood kids built a two story fort. It provided hours of escape "when anything was possible"
Hi Brian,
Okay, as requested I have now added a new chapter to the Opal Nation saga on this weeks Theme Thursday Corner.
I hope you enjoy it.
God bless.
Oh, man. I remember we had one of our rockets at Jones Beach on Long Island. We launched it an it disappeared, to my five-year-old eyes, "Into the Land of Neptune." My sister'd decided to teach me mythology, which she was studying in Ninth grade at the time. And the art... Back in "the day," for me. Thank you for your 55 words that launched me there.
The good ol' days! :)
Beautiful, Brian! And there's a little part of me that has re-awakened to the possibility anything indeed COULD happen. And might! Actually, a large part of me has re-awakened to much magic afoot.
xo
No limit to the imagination, that's for sure. Hope you and the kids have fun, enjoy your break.
This 55 sounds like a plan for playing with the boys. Enjoy your dad time. Fun read.
It is always fun to learn of what boys do in the backyard in the "olden days" -- much more interesting than us girls! LOL
Fun to read your write!
Have fun with your boys!
=)
So cool. I did my share of make believe with mine too. Miss those days.
Nice. Have fun with your boys.
Those were the good old days.
I remember those days of Everything is Possible. Charming piece, Brian.
Wow, does this bring me back to my own childhood experiences, Brian. Our bicycles used to be rocket ships sometime (and I don't know if you know about electric meters outside, but we would always 'blast off' when the indicator went to zero'; and sometimes the picnic table was one. We had dreams, and indeed everything WAS possible. Not bad to believe that....for a time.
The poem is so cute.
Have fun with your boys. Cherish what matters.
aww so sweet :)
Didn't we all?
I built forts that were unpenitrable!
Loved your pic. When you won a free game on a Gottlieb pinball machine, it gave a very resounding..THUD!!
Loved your 55 Son
Have fun with your boys
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End
Hehe.. I remember days just like these too. Kids used to use their imaginations then instead of their ipods and nintendo's and x box games... they don't know what real games are now do they? Unless they have a really 'cool' dad like a certain someone named Brian who teaches them ;)
Boy I wish more kids today would build rocket ships.
Reminds me of some great old movies too! :)
Take your time! Build that rocket for your boys! Have fun blasting off.
Have fun playing with the boys! Very fun poem. Very fun. :)
What a great nostalgic trip. It must have been a time machine because you sure to me back to my childhood!
I meant to tell you this morning (I looked early) that this is such a sweet one. So nice for you to have such memories when you are taking care of your own kids. I especially like the unbent nails. K.
Yes. It did. Again we share a memory and a sweet idea, Bri!
Saw you admiring my Kitty over at Shay's. We're a foot off the floor over that COOL poem-
Fond Aloha from Waikiki

imagination and faith together is awesome, huh? I hope you and the boys have lots of fun playing!
Yep,I was an astronaut as a kid, too. Brought back great memories.
Childhood memories ... it's a wondrous thing.
we believed
and it did.
x
hw I wish...this is excellent Brian
Woohoo!!! It's great when the imagination soars!!!
Maybe you and the 'boys' will build a rocket ship!!!
Ya kinda left me singin' "Rocket Man" here.........
God bless ya Man and have a fabulous weekend! :o)
Those were the best days!
Have fun with your boys, Brian!
I'd love to go up to space in a rocket ship. On my own. Perhaps my computer for company... sigh...

Those were the days, my friend. Ah, great memories.
LOVE this...I want to be a kid again with no problems or responsibilities!
enjoy your kids this week!!!
Playing with your boys is the best thing you could do and your 55 sure does make me feel young again.
Playing with your boys is the best thing you could do and your 55 sure does make me feel young again.
Brian: While you were building rocket ships, brother and I were turning our closet into the "wardrobe" from the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We're talking 50 years ago, though, for me and brother. Lots of hopes and dreams went into that closet. Somehow we never made it to Narnia, but we believed we would someday. D
I miss those starry eyed days. I was so sure by now I'd be living on another planet.
Childhood memories. I'll bet some of those rocket ships are still flying. :)
Enjoy your time with your kidlets.
enjoy the adventure from the eyes of your boys Bri
Thanks for your encouragement my friend - hugs to the Millers
This is a journey one can relate to, thanks for the 55, and for coming by my place!
Imagination powered rocket shiop -- the very best!
good times. brings back some good memories of my own...
"back when anything could happen,
afternoons & weekends,
for no other reason than we believed
it would & did."
I remember those days exploring gravel roads and creeks and fields feeling like the world was waiting to be uncovered. Now, I'm trying to recapture some of the magic in my day to day. We all still need to feel it :)
Oh the wonder of a child's imagination. What a shame we grow up.
Brian, for us it was an apple tree that was a coffee shop! Your poem was so wistful, I got tears in my eyes. Sign of a good heart tugger, so thanks for that... Amy

I never had the chance to make one. I hope you have a great time with your kids!! *hugs*
Hi! Brian...
Tks, for sharing your very [poetic] and very [descriptive] words Of a childhood memory.
"i am posting early. my boys are out of school on break the second part of this week so i am doing a bit more playing than usual and may not be as quick to respond to comments the next couple days."
*No Worries* That what life is all about...too! lol
deedee ;-D
I loved the good old days were dreams were reality and reality was filled with fantasy :)
Ah... the good ol' days. You painted a great picture... even without the picture.
Lovely. Wishing back some days when anything can happen just because I believe :)
Magic days when our imaginations took us anywhere we wanted to go.
Love this, perfect, wish I'd written it - said in an admiring, non-jealous way. :^)
Cool
Gosh, I remember those days...we were so sure of ourselves in many ways. Thanks for sharing this sweetness.
"Back when anything could happen" is a wonderful place we should revisit more often. We might surprise ourselves.
Ah those blissful days when every dream seemed possible.
Another good one, Brian.
Invite me over- I'll fill in for the aliens.. :)
Wishing you a fun time.... whhhoooooshhh!!
xoxo
"back when anything could happen,
afternoons & weekends,

This is a great application for adults as well; what you believe in, what you meditate on, has power ... to take you toward lift-off, to hold you fast to the earth, to bind you up and burn you alive. Our minds are powerful things; whether the focus is negative or positive, our thoughts make things happen.

For no other reason...yea, this makes me smile. Nice one Brian.
wasn't that a great time, when anything could happen?
I've never had a rocket ship, but a very busy seaport along the road , cruise ships, circus careers, teepees and magic self-made brews ...Wow, those were the days
Hope you enjoyed the break with your boys.;) We have a break next week here.;))
And I do miss those days when anything had the potential to unfold at any time - I still try to feel that way.;)
xoxo
I used to like to work on things in my uncle's shop. My father didn't have one. I don't remember him building anything, but I have a table that he built before I was born. It is a fine piece of furniture. Maybe he stopped because there was no more time or because he turned to other things.
This brought back the childhood days when all things were possible--and I still feel that most days.
Rockets of empty toilet paper rolls and pointed drinking cup noses with red crepe paper tails...
