55 - State of the Union

i found Minnesota today
in detritus along the roadway

without even knowing it was missing
cause they don't bother milk carton-ing
faces anymore,
of things that are broken

but now you reside in my pocket
where rugged edges
bite each time i sit

my elementary teacher
would be proud,
the Capitol(s), i no longer forget

Tell a story in 55 words. Give it a try, or just read more, go see g-man.

Found this the other day and the thought popped in my head about whole states disappearing without anyone noticing. Guess I found a little dark humor in that, and the current socio-economic-political climate. Thus the intentional mis-spelling of capital at the end as well.

If you are in or around Richmond, VA tomorrow night, I will be one of the feature poets at Art 6 downtown. Come on out, it starts at 7 pm.

Poor MN. I guess Al Franken wasn't enough comic relief to keep them alive. But he keeps me laughing.
Nice 55 and "break a leg" at the show.

Oh, I like this one very much! And I just have to say grrrrr about not living closer to Richmond. Have fun! I know you will be most awesome :)

Nice thought you spun around to come up with this one. Minnesota, folks might note and cared if it disappeared. The Dakotas on the hand ...

Anne said...

With this one I can "hear" a tone of voice when I read the words. It's the way a lost boy would speak at dusk, in the rain, while kicking a rock with his feet, alone.

Tabor said...

Oh great...now entire states are disappearing. Does this have anything to do with global warming?

ipenka said...

Wow, very clever. Even more impressive that you actually found it!

Dunno if you've seen the WTF video but CA is going to become its own country soon. With Alaska.

The government has been throwing states to the side of the road for years. I'm glad you found Minnesota and saved it from rusting into the good earth.
You amaze me Brian. You could write a poem about anything. Your life is a poem. This was a good one.

Scotch Tape, The Mayo Clinic, Yada Yada Yada...Hubert Humphrey?
AND....It makes for a Most Excellent 55.

without even knowing it was missing. ha ha Quite a few people reside in that state. Now, I'd understand if you were talking about Wyoming with a population of a little over 560,000 people! :)

Clever and funny! Makes one wonder what other unlikely things might go missing and end up in a pocket.

Fred said...

I like this idea a lot. Missing states. On the literal and metaphoric levels, I love that idea. Really creative notion here, don't ya love when an object or simply something that catches your eye can instantly spark the creative pot boiling. Great job here. Thanks

Margie said...

Gosh, I'd love to be at your reading tomorrow night!
I just know it will be awesome!

Great 55!
Thank you, Brian.

Reminds me of my own county of Yorkshire. The biggest in England, so it was eventually chopped up into 5 smaller counties, 2 of which didn't have Yorkshire in the name - went missing.

Funny to find something like that. That could be quite a story...the sudden disappearance of an entire state!

Another great piece, Brian! I really like the milk carton reference here and:

Congratulations on your gig tonight... will be there in spirit.

Yes, it is a scary climate we live in these days. That would make a wonderful ad campaign...all the things we're missing on milk cartons. Great job, Brian.

And what are the rules for 'capitalization' or 'capitalisation'...and is that an 's' or 'z' ???

And this is another grrreat '55, Brian.
