beneath the canopy,
up-raised arms & leaves,
where the rope swing sways
in an afternoon breeze, bees
buzz lazy lullabies, birds
hold their breath
as we melt back
into the dirt
from whence we
came once, tap root deep
seeking secret rivers
to damp parched lips---
grass tickles bare skin,
too late to cause the giggles.

The simplicity of a summer day (I love it!). You made me feel the warm summer breeze on my face. Your poem is a breath of fresh air my love
Really covered a brisk summer day
To bad they don't seem here to stay
As the only breeze I can find around here
Is my hot air I fear
Getting nice and toasty up this way
Sure for a few months it's here to stay
I feel sacraligious leaving a comment after your wife's. So I will just agree with it, well except for the " my love" part. It is truly a gift to all of us.
God bless.
A wonderful story mate. Good summer feel
"where the rope swing sways" Lovely line. I want to write a book so that this can be the title,
Nice. No extraneous words or images, grate compression in the middle both visually and metaphorically. Sweet turn at the end.
Makes me want to go back and give it another read. Love that.
Lovely, as always. But, you forgot to mention the trickle of sweat running down my back ........

Sounds like the weather is just right & not to HOT! Lol
The advent of summer, a dreaded change from the recent leisurely spring, very well captured in verse
Summer... you lucky fish! Freezing cold here. But the picture you paint has warmed me up a lot. Love the 'secret rivers...damp parched lips... tickles bare skin'. You have captured the essence of summer, Brian!
Yes, this feels like Virginia. I lived there briefly a looooong time ago.
what a lovely summer day~ i am tickled pink *smiles*
i still have to learn how to make
my verses tight yet powerful like yours...
Summer dirt nap?
Makes me think back to the summers of my childhood. Very nice!
Yes, summertime is here! It is even here in Bellingham, and the birds must not be holding their breath, since they are making LOTS of noise right now. A very gentle poem, Brian.
This is gorgeous!
Beware the ants...especially the really tiny ones that can end up in strange places :) (Sorry...suffering heat stroke today!lol)
i am with mrsupole, definitely not with mrhatt:)
Love the imagery in this poem. Very evocative :O)
sigh...summer in the tall grass can be a very cool place.
I feel summer in your words.
This is just the kind of weekend we had.
Glad you did, too.
=)
The sounds, the sights the sensations of a perfect summer day Brian. BEUATIFUL!
Loved the capturing of that moment. Really well done. The flow definitely conveyed the atmosphere. Thanks

Sounds like a perfect moment.
Gee whiz, everything and everyone is summering away.
Sounds like perfection to.
Cheers, jj
Lovely poem, also reminds me of the tree where Forest Gump buried Jenny.
"as we melt back
into the dirt
from whence we
came once,"
"as grass tickles bare skin, too late for giggles"
Brian, this is gorgeous :)
Beautiful, reminds me of being a kid, when summer actually meant fun and freedom.
Dang, I kind of miss summer. I mean, we have summer here but I miss the kind of summer where I used to make chains out of dandelions.
I love the playful line breaks and words wedged inbetween lines that make us take a deep breath and sink in...I'm feeling this one!
Lovely dreamy verse. Thanks for all you have done in One Shot and earlier in the Poet's Rally. I wish you luck in whatever your future holds.
Sounds like summer to me Brian. Better yet, it "feels" like summer too - you have a way with words!
mmmm. i just love summer...bees buzzing lazy lullabies....so summery sweet! you captured it so well! :)
As someone previously mentioned there is an air of youth to these words and definitely reminded me of the summers of my youth when life was still innocent. Lovin' the breeze-bees-buzz alliteration.
Ahh....love those summer days!
I dig the language you've got going on here...very nice. Keep it up!
I love your alliteration here Brian. Your line breaks are perfect, your imagery divine (by all accounts of previous comments as well). A lovely capture of a summer day.
Mmmmm.... yes, this captures the feeling of summer VERY well!
Quintessential summer! Wonderful!

I think that there is more here than just a summer day.... maybe not.
It's a lovely poem and I'm # 55 to comment, so I think it has all been said.
Warmed me up a treat.
mmm..mm..well what do you expect after a read like that thats how most react :)
A breathless description....:-)Hugs
Too late to cause the giggles, huh? I gotta admit that I'm in love with that line.

ooooh I want to be in that spot and mood forever as it is fantastic
Thanks to your words I feel a dreamy mood coming on...
when life's stress bogs us down, a simple stretch back under a lovely tree on a summer's day has a way of reminding us of all that is right ...
lovely reminder and poem!!
goodness!
I could feel the warmth of the sun and hear the gentle sound of bees busily working on the garden flowers!! Wind blowing in the trees...hot and dry!!
Ahhh summer. You captured it well!

Wonderful summer imagery. I especially like "tap root deep / seeking secret rivers"
......Seeking Secret Rivers... Beautiful.
I like this.
It's good that poets feed of each other. We make the whole world safer.
This is lovely... feels like a hammock swaying in the summer. I like the "tap root deep/seeking secret rivers".
Beautiful. I feel the happy innocence of summer.
