the crushing rush flowing corner to corner
outside Madison Square Garden.
Head down, moving on they pay little notice
as he sprays shimmering orbs from his
bubble blower into the air. They dance lazily
among the taxis, rising on updrafts of exhaust,
catching the sun in liquid rainbows as they
emerge from shadows between the imposing buildings.
Somewhere around the third floor they pop and
a few people finally look up, sticking a hand out,
grumbling that the weatherman never
mentioned rain as a possibility, while a man in
the cafe smiles, raising his half full glass of
soda to take a sip, enjoying the view.

Looks like you acquired lots of grist for your already prolific poetic mill!
I won't ever tell...;-)
Nice pic, now that's what I'm talkin about!
This is a good example of the power of observation that must be ingrained in the poet. Splendid imagery...a bit of beauty in the midst of all that craziness.
your past catching up to you?
I love how you take the every day and turn it into the extrodinary
Bet you'll be poeting (I made that word up, but I like it) about NY for a while.
Nice...inspiration in the everyday...
Oh now you know everyone has to stop at Macy's in Harold Square. I'd have bought you a tie there. There's a whole floor of them ;-)
Gay (really well done...been there and I know it)
Love those bubble blowers.
And it wasn't me. I swear :-)
jj
Haha - it wasn't me that warned them to suit up!! :)
It totally wasn't me... I was on ice all weekend. :)
There's so much tumbling around in these words, these bubbles... beauty in the midst of chaos.
Do they drink S O D A in NY? I figured they clean/wash the streets with Mateuse Rose. After it's been consumed of course!
That policeman leaning on car is the kind of photo we DIE for. thank you, Brian!
And of course, welcome home!
Soda and a smile...smirk. Nice one, put me right there, and lived up to my expectations...engaged senses thank you :)
Laid back vibe to this one.
Loved this Brian. I used to live in NY. Blessings.
You made me smile. Hope you are still enjoying it. I love to visit NYC, but I love living where it is much quieter, and no, I would never tell either.
Kat
Very nice. There's a little of everything there!
Someone leaked it? haha...I bet you never find out!
I just LOVE NYC so much. I don't get up there as often as I should. I'm going to look at it differently after reading your words. Please please please go to Canal St. and write. And have some dim sum while you are there.
Imperfect prose? Never happens. I say, "Imperfection is an oxymoron".
A New York minute.. Brian style.
I enjoyed this and NYC is fun.
I can just visualize it-- your images hang in the air too. Congrats on the Shorty!
ah, excellent. love the unexpected turn from the first to second stanza, and the contrast of perspective at the end.
Amazing how some people just grumble, even thought they have been given a gift.
I like the surprise twist!
Lovely bubbles wafting upwards... Nice picture in my head. But the guy in your photo reminds me of my country - we see that all the time! When it first started in in 1990's it made me feel so uncomfortable, but now I hardly notice!
Here's a toast to the man with the half-full glass! Nice effects.
Sorry. Just asked for police escort, not the SWAT team ;)
"catching the sun in liquid rainbows," lovely for NYC...say hello to the "other' big city or me!
Beautiful how you have elavated the mundane to the level of sublime through the power of your words.
Lovely Post. I countersign David Allen's Comment. Thanks for the post.
You write really well Brian. Keep at it. Don't ever stop....
I have been in NYC twice, each visit was very different. I bet one can go there a thousand times and it will never be the same.;)
Have a great day dear Brian.;)
xoxo
Never been to NYC. Would love to go there someday. Enjoy your day.
Love and joy,
Susan
You have a keen observation, Brian. Wish I could say the same about me.
Frightening photo, but I adore your description of the soap bubbles!
we all should blow way more soap bubbles on the street...it's so fun, shiny and colorful
xx
So how much was that street vendor asking for the rifle?
Damn I knew I shouldn't have mention where I was going when I tried to get across the border
Maybe that is where they go the order
As they thought you were in league with the cat
And was going to beat someone with a bat
Also exactly what I'd expect from New York
Good thing you stayed away from the port
As some clown might have thrown you in the drink
But I'm sure with your hot air you'd never sink
hahahaha that was good
I know you understood
Brian, you leave me speechless with your talent...This was amazingly written! Great twists and turns...Your imagery takes me there...
Never a DULL moment in NYC!
a bubble gun...I love this creative, quirky approach to sending out orbs of joy to those who are paying attention and open to receiving such precious gifts.
You know... I think I've enjoyed your trip to NYC almost as much as you have!
Glad the man in the cafe appreciated the bubbles! :-)
Nice. I love when you catch little scenes like this. How was the city?
a lovely image, in spite of the grumbles.
I see you got an armed escort. RIGHT?
Great poem! I get way too overwhelmed in the city to notice these little nuggets of life. I'm glad someone else can!
Oh if only we could replace the bullets with bubbles!
True - there's always something happening in NYC. Have a good day! xo
Come Out With Your Hands In The Air! We Have The Place Surrounded!
I grew up in Brooklyn. And I blew bubbles on the streets many a time. This brought me back - made the city pop out. Thank you for this. God Bless and Keep.
I developed the hobby of people watching when I lived there. I used to imagine people's stories, their sadness etc... New York is fertile ground for writing material. I bet your poetic mind had a blast there.
You make me think of my niece who was in Madison Square Garden this week... Thanks for always providing provocative poetry.
And just what kind of soda was the "man" in the cafe drinking that day, Brian? :)
I love bubbles and you captured the moment beautifully.
was it you, smiling in the cafe, pen and paper next to you..?
i love how the bubbles dance lazily, rising on exhaust fumes and catch the sun - the beautiful and the ugly, the ordinary and the extraordinary...
oh and i told them to be there because of your explosive poetry..smiles
Good eye, Brian!
=)
Very evocative and with a clever twist so early on in the piece, I was expecting mayhem where there was whimsy. Fabulous language, I especially loved this: 'the crushing rush' and this 'as he sprays shimmering orbs' and this 'rising on updrafts of exhaust' (here I expected updraft of air and with the entire poem you surprised me ;)
Love this one, Brian!
Nice poem as usual.Liked it!
Despite the firepower you made it out.
Fantastic! You can take anything and turn it into a wordy work of art. :)
Again you drop me into the middle of a moment, fleshed out for all of my senses. I lift my glass with the guy in the cafe and say "Cheers to he who makes rainbows dance in the middle of confusion and grime."
I like the title - so appropriate. Sometimes life just needs to be recorded.
Perfect in my opinion.
Congrats on the Shorty Award.
And you look like you're having a super time in NYC.
oh oh oh, this is a good one...
love the cadence to it along with the imagery.
What a wonderful image formed in my mind of those bubbles and the bystanders. Thank you!
Liquid rainbows -- I really like that. And aren't there like 1,000,000,000 microbes in a raindrop? Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a teensy bit. But a lot.
xo
Hi! Brian...
What a very descriptive post..."Sights UnseeN(yc)"
I like your play on words in the title too!
Thanks, for the journey...I like to "play" catch-up on the happenings!
DeeDee ;-)
Did ya love it? Are you back? Was it great? What was the best part?
Spill the beans!
This post makes me want to fly to NYC and see this kind of thing for myself.
Thanks, Brian.
I thought for sure he was going to raise his glass and make a toast!!
Hugs
SueAnn
I can see this in my mind's eye...and Yay, to bubbles!
So true how most people wander around not even knowing what is going on around them. Good writing.
I was quite concerned at the first stanza, thinking that even on vacation your life is dangerous, but then loved the whimsy that followed even though those around were too busy to see the beauty. You capture such interesting and unique moments.
wow... bullets becoming bubbles, the magic raining down... the hearts breaking, in us. i love how you see the world, brian.
good one brian. :)
Nice. Rather bubbles than snow.
I can see the man in the cafe smiling. Would love to go to NYC, and I will someday. I like how you used the word, imposing :)
