yo. yo. man.
we travel up
& down
cats cradle
(rock the baby)
walking the dog until
we have traveled
around the world
back again &
ready we
shoot the moon.
it's so far
so far
far
(jerk. jerk.)
up & down again
at the whim
of the finger
tied at the other end
of this umbilical
then slip
trick missed
left spinning
dangling haphazard
slow hanging
yo. yo. man.
wind me up
again
yo. yo. man.
don't leave me
undone
i watch the old man, beard blending yellow, wrap the string with care through the middle, just enough tension to keep it stable, but allow it room to play. his crease wizened eyes twinkle as he sends the cosmos spinning once again, letting it roll off the end of his finger. we travel up & down...
yo. yo. man.

what great visuals you weave my friend, I can see him, sitting...brilliant
i love yo-yos, wonderful description.
Your vision of this world and your ability to describe it to us, are wonderful!
That's my bi Nick Name! ..smiles..
...flows like warm butter off of a knife, Brian... and the wisdom ... WOW!
That yoyo spinning ball of mud speeding through the universe at 26,000 mph. Is the bearded man really in control???
I like this poem a lot. I remember spending hours flicking my yo-yo and feeling the pull back. Mesmerizing.
excellent! can't do that with a fushigi.
This sounds to me like a very uncomfortable life to lead, up and down, at the whim of a finger.
Could I please opt out of this one?
I never did catch onto to yo-yo-ing (except for diets in college,) but soemthing tells me you are as expert at it as your fine poem indicates. Pretty cool!
xo
a slice of life captured
I love your description yellow beard
I can picture it
Watching someone proficient with the yo yo is fascinating, isn't it? I always tried but did not spend much time with it.
Oh my gosh! I remember my son going through soooo many yo-yo's. He was a collector.
He had those tricks down to an art. It was fun and entertaining to watch.
Oh how I have missed your writings. so glad to be back. I love this, how your yo yo man describes lifes cycles. very inspiring. smiles. All the best in the New Year Brian, health and happiness to you and yours. c
"Don't leave me hanging"...brilliant!
I like the way you bring visuals into...unique descriptions.
Yoyo's are fun! Never was very good at it but it sure was fun...it really is entertaining to watch people that are good at it though...you described this fun so well!
I wish I could do all those tricks you described!
I never got it about yo yo's. Or firecrackers. Must be boy things. But I enjoyed your poem. :-)
Really great yoyo rhythm here, Brian!
Great portrait of the yoyo man.
Yo yo did a great job.
Yo. Yo, man, you spun me round and up and down with this one. Yo. ;-)
you are the word master!
Reading comments on your posts are excellent. After all that reading I find that I have nothing more to say as everyone seems to steal my thoughts.
Yo Yo!
Joy always,
Susan
Oh please do come
dont leave me undone..
Beautiful and vivid as usual Brian. Making the mundane special.
Nice! I was always such a poseur when it came to the Yoyo, and fascinated at people who can make the dog walk and all those other fancy schmancy tricks.
What a great picture...who would have thought of writing this? You!
A good example of poets see things that others wouldn't notice.
uh huh I know that feeling!
"Wind me up again - don't leave me undone."
You're brilliant!
Yo.Yo. Man. I've traveled round the world and climbed Jacob's ladder :). Cats in the cradle, that too.
yo yo...it was a fantastic read man... :)
so... have I ever told you I uhm well kinda like uhm well... love the stuff you uhm like write man. Yo. Just like that. Around the world ya know? ツ
oh nice! haven't seen one for years but we used to spent hours, trying to "shoot the moon" - my fingers start to itch, reading this - maybe i should buy one again..
It is funny how quickly you learn that one of the most important things about using a Yo-Yo is winding the string properly. It is almost like riding a bike, once you learn, you never seem to forget.
One can live life tightly wound, like a jackass, or loosen up and live life to where you are always able to bounce back from what life throws at you.
Good, bad, as long as you try to play with a Yo-Yo, you will find it is fun. Love is like that.
God bless.
Marvellous!
Beautiful!!
Take care
A yo yo Man, somewhat a play of life's ups and downs. You captured it very well, Brian!
Yo Yo Mah, man.
this This is Excellent, you have such a way Brian
Great post! You are such a guy!
This was fun...I FELT your descriptive words
good one brian! loved it.

I have not thought about yo-yo's in a while! what a nice scene you create
especially the end-a true song. Thanks!
YEAH! The yo yo! I guess stocking hung by the chimney with care aren't as likely to hold one of those anymore.
I sure did love mine.
Gotta ask the students who work for me if they know what a yo yo is.
There are many things now that they give me blank looks about.
This sounds a bit self reflective, lol.
Dang, you have a knack for observing the everyday and then capturing it to teach us about ourselves. Nice piece.
Love it. You're never too old for yo-yoing!
This is really beautiful and as always in your writing, I feel there is a real depth to your thoughts. You could take the words at face value and they would still be amazing or you could read the underlying emotion in them which stuns me.
You are a wonderful writer.
This is great!
I once saw a kid's drawing -- full of soldiers and tanks and planes all shooting bombs and bullets and from a cloud a giant yo yo was descending. There was an arrow pointing to it -- God's yo yo, the label read.
Your poem would be petfect with that drawing.
Fun post Brian! Yo-yo's were so fun when we were kids. . .well, right up until you get nailed in the head trying to go "around the world".
This created interesting images for me. What imagination you have.
And yes the yo-yo keeps spinning.
We bought one of our nephews a
yoyo a couple of years ago. I think I was more excited about it than anyone.
I am the yoyo.
This is taking me to deep places,
man.
: )
Love the images that played in my head as I read this!! Happy New Year Brian!!
Hugs
SueAnn
This is very cool!
Such vivid descriptions and an all around delightful piece. I never had much luck with yo yo's myself, but I always liked to watch people that could do all the tricks.
Never had the hands for a yo-yo, but I appreciate those who do.
I can always count on you writing at least two levels of meaning with your magic words! AWESOME metaphor you've got here. I lost my string this year...but I'm starting to look for it ;-)
My middle brother and I had Duncan yo-yos in the early 1970's. He was very talented with his, and I spent a great deal of time trying not to knock myself in the face with mine. It was fun, and this write brought back lots of memories.....smiles
now I remember who you remind me of-
Kerouac
Cool. I bought my niece and nephews yo-yo's for Christmas. The littlest dragged his around like a pull toy. The adults had more fun trying to show they still had some cool tricks up their sleeves! :)
Neat, Brian. We used to love our yo-yos as kids. Funny enough, my oldest son got one in his Christmas cracker this year. What a blast we had trying to 'walk the dog' :)
god. that's cool.
I remember when my son was really into yo yos. Fun and spinny.
So cool!
I could never figure out how to do that. I think it might just be a boy/guy thing.
It is mesmerizing to watch someone who is so adept with such a simple toy. But I must confess, a "real" yo-yo was not what I was thinking about as I read this...
Great stuff!
for some reason i see this as a rap song. maybe all the singing i'm doing lately. :0)
WOW!! You've not only got visuals of action here, but tempo that pulls the reader along like a magician or yo-yo man draws audience attention. This is brilliant. Love it!!
Happy New Year Brian
great one...I didn't figure it out until the end and then had to go back and reread it...very fun and whimsical.
I like a yo yo. Used to be able to do all kinds of tricks with it. We are yo yos too. I am doing less wild swinging now and am more in synch.
Graet thoughts. I am bowled over.
Happy New Year, Brian.
Great one. Reminded me of life.
