i saw the bumper sticker
on your car today
(freedom of speech)
& wonder when love
became a cat o' nine tails
striping the backs of those
deemed different, whose life
circumstances, not as
lily white, robbed them
of your grace
& i hope
your god has a special place
for bigots posing as zealots.

OUCH! Wow, dude I like this side of you...powerful,straight to the point...brilliant!
cheers
ha. went political yesterday, religeous today david...who knows...i'll be back to happy lyrical come monday...
I hate those bumper stickers. I don't like bumper stickers period.
love the title as well!
Righteous indignation baby! Love this one!
...applause...
I knew you'd be early...
Feel free to rant all you want Son.
I Love soap box 55's!
Thanks for always playing so well Brian. Your support is very much appreciated.
Have a Kick Ass Week-End...G
They are out there and it's is both unfortunate and scary. My 55 will be up at 8 PM your time.
Ok, now I want to know what it said?!? Or did I miss that?
I'm a Christian, but I have to admit, I don't dare put a fish emblem on my rear bumper because my driving habits might be considered sacrilegious ;-)
Amen! Brilliant, inspiring, blood warming 55, friend!
thanks for this and can you believe they are going to protest Elizabeth Edwards funeral!! wtf?!?
Amen to that!
and I knew I could count on seeing your 55 up early, lol. Mine's here
Nobody is safe from your prose! I love it!! :)
Great job at pointing out the hypocrisy of some "religious folk" Well done.
Yikes! I can only imagine what the bumper sticker said, but lord knows what makes bigots think advertising their stupidity is a good thing.
Some bumper stickers make me want to rear-end the car!
ooo there are some sharp barbs on that one Bri
Way to go!!
moonie smiles
bumper stumpers
These people often present with little-to-no pride and a less than average lifespan...
Besides - what self respecting person would put stickers on their car?
Oooh. This was strong and I love it. Again you said so much in 55 words. Great.
Whoa. You're timing is impeccable (as always). I had a car cut me off in traffic yesterday, the driver flipping me the bird and skittering on the ice as they drove off, revving the gas and displaying their religion loud and proud.
The sticker?
"1 cross + 3 nails = 4given".
I kid you not.
Your. Not 'you're'. Ugh.
Nicely done...powerful.
Definitely shooting straight arrows this week! Very pointed message here!
No honey laced with lies for you. Excellent poem!
Amen!
Amen. I'm not much for bumper stickers myself, but I do like some that I see, although mostly they just help point out the idiots in the crowd.
Funny thing...I got a new follower today, who does not have a blog (as far as I can tell) but I went to check out a random blog he follows. Awesome poetry. And I thought - "this reminds me of Brian Miller. I should tell him to come read this stuff. He would like this stuff. I'm going to leave a comment..." and there you were! Ha!
Oh, yah...8 AM. In case you were wondering. ;)
Powerful and when you said you saw it on "my car" I got real attentive.
preach it, brother! well done!
Amen!
so true!
I love funny bumper stickers.
It scares, devoid of hope - telling the other one that futility lies in its hopefulness..
Whoa, Brian. Preach it brother.
Well said! VERY WELL SAID!
powerful words as always - loved "...wonder when love
became a cat o' nine tails
striping the backs of those
deemed different..." & message received.
Love it... And this is pure genius: bigots posing as zealots. Please spare us from these people!
well done
Yeah, I love this. I've seen that bumper sticker and a dozen in the same vein. Spot on Brian.
Perfect. You are amazing with words. XX
yeah fling the stones back - love this - and reminded me when jesus wrote in the dust that day - flinging back words that made them think, and stopped them from condemning this woman..great one!
Don't hold back - tell us how you really feel! (I'm with ya 100%)
My sticker says bring back happy lyrical Brian, hehe.
Bravo!
jj
Smooth yet piercing. You do have a way with words.
Joy always,
Susan
I've missed this while I was away in November. Right to the point. Excellent my friend. Have a wonderful Friday :)
In my experience it's zealots posing as bigots and God has left the planet.
I've never seen a bumber sticker and by the sound of it I don't want to.
Powerful,love this one!
That's kind of what I've been saying this week - but MUCH better said!
Excellent 55.
Brian, this is most powerful!!!!!
[and I love your 55 happy's on the FF55 comments at Galen's]
Here's mine
Hope you can find time to visit.
Happy Friday
Happy weekend.
This was great Brian, and CM's comment - I could not agree more!
It's Christmas soon, Brian. Cheer up. (Christmas is here for me already!)
But I agree - I hate Bs who pretend to be Zs. And zealots are pretty scary too.
Love this!
I too hate those bumper stickers!! Love this post!
Hugs
SueAnn
Wow, really powerful Brian! Don't hold anything back now, ya'hear!?
Tell it Brian!
Amen my friend! AMEN!
bigots posing as zealots --oh yeah...
oooohhhh good stuff!
It all works out in both this plane and the next. I don't concern myself with fools.
Maybe we should design bumper stickers that tell it like this post does. Great job writing about the horrible hatred and bigotry strangling the unity in our country and in the world.
I can deal with bigots. It's the zealots who are freakin' crazy ....
ps: I hate bumper stickers.
ps: I hate bumper stickers.
I just had this talk with our 2 teenage sons this morning..how people can think their way is the only way and the right way.
Thanks for agreeing with me (-:
I always love your 55 - your talent knows no bounds! ;)
I feel the same way. MEAN PEOPLE SUCK. Wha?
Ohhh cat-o-nine-tails !
that is a zinger- Thanks.
Excellent!!!!
Your brevity made the point loud and clear.
I don't like most bumper stickers, but saw a good one the other day that said, I'm already against the next war. Liked that.
deep - thought provoking, as usual - bluntly honest... will be looking at bumper stickers as I come for the boys today.
Powerful..
Doesn't it feel good to get it off your chest!
splendid and candid.

Brian That was a Wow! Very good piece!
Powerful 55, Brian.
Ooh I like this a LOT. Wish I could fit it all on a bumper sticker.
Brav0!! This was powerful my friend... powerful!!!!
lol glad you got that out of your system :-) sometimes, things just need to be said!
It's hard to believe that anyone ever believes killing other people is okay. It would seem the most basic and logical thing NOT to do!
Nice 55, Brian!
Ya'll always offer up a load of variety man!
Now don't hold back...just tell us how ya feel! Heeeehehe!
Have a blessed weekend man! :o)
You always give a powerful message with your 55s. Love it!
Love the title!! Amen was the first word that popped to mind.
Yes, yes, yes! I cannot tell you how many times I had had these same thoughts (not as eloquently presented as yours are) when reading someone's bumper sticker.
I was browsing a site that puts slogans on t-shirts and mugs the other day and had to leave I got so physically ill from the sheer sarcasm and hate. Excellent 55 and excellent message.
Mine's Here
Freedom of speech sometimes irritates the hell out of me.
Perfectly said.
LOVE.
That would be a good bumper sticker don't you think?
Oww! Straight to the point and LOVE that about you. :)
Bigots posing as zealots -- great line. And yes, even they are welcome at the proverbial table.
My belief is that there is no special place after death for anyone, bigoted or otherwise. But the driver's un-loving attitude goes along with misery, one way or another, in this life.
Powerful Brother! :) Have a bumper sticker free weekend!!
It makes me sad.
I particularly like this piece Brian! Somewhere along the way we lose the foundation meaning of the word Grace. Thanks for the visit. :))
Amen
Love has always had barbs. Mankind has always had "us" and "them". I long for the day when your words, though beautifully expressed, are no longer true.
Could you be thinking about those 'God Hates Fags' lunatics?
This is a great one Brian. It is right on.
Loved this, so powerful in only a few lines... I particularly liked the last two.;))
Have a great Saturday dear Brian,
xoxo
This is brilliant! I am actually a bit in awe...incredibly powerful and hugely thought provoking. I WISH I could be this precise with words!
Please let me know when you put out a poetry book...
I'll buy. :)
Wouldn't put a bumper sticker on my car for ANYTHING. But I sit behind them at a light and long to scrape them off.
Sometimes when I'm behind a relaly great bumper sticker I wish I had a camera mounted and ready to capture it, would make a fun series of posts. Jim, hubby, can you get that camera set up,, please!? :)
AWESOME (as always!)
xo
I write down the bumper stickers I see that catch my attention. This one, this post, made me think of some people I know. Some of them profess to be Christians yet do not help people in their own family. I often think of that bumper sticker I saw once: What would Jesus do? I'm sure he would have helped the down-trodden, the sick, the prostitutes, the alcoholics, the poor, and on and on. People seem to forget who he REALLY was. Wasn't he born to an unmarried woman??? Oh the stigma attached!!!
Powerful punch in that one! Well said.
Great one, Brian. I read about a baptist church out west that plans to picket Elizabeth Edwards funeral for a few hours before it starts because they claim God hates her and she's condemned to Hell. Their ignorance makes me angry...
if anyone is looking for me this weekend...you wont find me here...meant to put a post up and have only a few minutes now...but i am out of town...one thing i am excited about is i will be at the richmond poetry slam tonight...so wish me luck. smiles.
Oh, oh, oh, there are not words to convey just how much you're hit the nail on the head. I love it!
Oops, I meant 'you've' not 'you're.'
You have a well furnished brain man!
:)
what a great post Brian! sorry for not keeping up with all your beautiful posts lately... it has been a bit 'hectic' around here (I wish the reason would be just decorating for Christmas but it's not) hope you have a wonderful w-e!
good that you dare to speak up
very well said mate, happy weekend :)
Powerful and to the point. Well spoken. Blessings.
Bumper stickers, seen them. Sets one thinking. Great, Brian!
Oh gosh, Brian, if anyone knows about this, I sooo do. Great words here.
Love this bit:
"whose life
circumstances, not as
lily white, robbed them
of your grace"
this is well written Brian. w/o ruining the intent, will you elaborate on why a bumper sticker reading "freedom of speech" is akin to bigotry? it seems just the opposite.
Bigots, zealots,...hypocrites...
what a title!
great piece Brian.
Whoa!! Blunt and dark! Sarcastic and thought provoking! All criteria for me liking a post are fulfilled here!!
I HATE those hypocritical sticker people! They make me cringe...
Amen to that. I'm reminded of the song by Lennon, and I try to Imagine.
One of my favorites. As a Christian I am constantly mortified by the things other people do or say in God's name. It makes it a tough fight for the rest of us. Great title too.
Merry Christmas.
Just re-reading this again reminded me of a bumper I saw recently with two stickers: one that was on living in peace but right net to it, another that said something like "my dog is smarter than your honour student" Yeah, great start there! Oh dear me.
