the sign at the mall
by the doors streaming
human cattle,
shows a map, of all the
places they go &
there is a red dot marked
YOU ARE HERE
but looking around
i see no one
until i spy
a sprightly man, rather portly
in crimson and white
& though i am the tallest
one in line & i swear
i see a grimace when i
sit on his knee
i have so much to tell him
"nothing plastic or flashy
with lights and wild noises
nothing to kill time or
ever more mind numbing
no what is want most..."
i whisper in his ear &
walk past the glum faces
too old to believe
as i suck the stripes
off the candy cane
he gave me, expectantly.
fa-la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la...

There is such a thing as taking one's inner child too far, Brian, especially when you throw out the poor store Santa's knee!
Enjoyed this, as I always enjoy what you create, my friend. Mine is up early as well, just waiting for mr Linky this evening.
Holy smokes! I'm first at Waystation One!
The one who is here is you, silly! lol
Dear Brian
Be of good cheer, Christmas is near. I hope you don't receive "plastic and lights" instead a whispered "good night and all that is promised." Have fun one and all -- if it don't work out, before you know it -- it'll come again next year, another chance to get it right. Loved your write-- so you sat on the big guy's knee?
Sir, despite your steadfast Refusal to honor the Art of Poesy with rhyme and meter - and lots of Caps - there was Wisdom in your last comment to my thread, if not to your Present Particular Poem.
Therefore, indeed, like you - but only in this one Particular - have I declined the seduction of wealth through poetry and made my Stand upon Art for Art's sake.
There shall be no Adverts upon mine goodly blog, Hear Ye one and all...
Way cool.
Oh, I hope you get your wish!!!!
Ouch. Poor Mall Santa. They don't get paid enough to hold full grown adults.
Good one, Brian. But your mistake was in going to the mall . . .
Malls . . . they so spoil the essence of Christmas but I am glad that a visit there made you spout sense to us!
Joy and more joy,
Susan
Brilliant. A little belief never hurt anyone (ok, maybe santas lap...lol)
THAT was whimsical, entirely enjoyable -- and just a tad poignant.
I like it.
:-)
Pearl
Unless of course, the store Santa was your wife. Then I can imagine what you whispered. LOL
Love it! All I want for Christmas is peace, love, joy and hope for all. That's not too much to ask for is it? :)
I am a kid at heart. I love all there is about the holidays. It hasn't always been like that. It is a gift. Candy canes rock!
♥namaste♥
Awesome! But Santa needs a knee replacement. lol.
Those were the days...When I believed...Then when my brother broke my heart tellin me there was no such thing...and I refused to lie to my daughters...My mom is still upset about that..
if you're not too old to suck the stripes off the candy cane then you're not too old to believe either..smiles
Never too old for Santa... can't wait to see the man myself. xx
Never too old to believe, but I hope you weren't asking for your two front teeth ;)
your post gave me a laugh as did the comments following!
this was great!
thank you :)
It's great that little boy Brian sat on Santa's lap. Wish I knew what the wish was.
Very cute poem.
lol! Loved it!
One would like to know though what you whispered in Santa's ears :)
Love it... there is no such thing as taking your inner child too far! ;-)
My M.I.L. once sat on Santa's lap while visting us and it is one of my favorite photos. I think Santa was really enjoying it, because she was a delightful sprite. Haven't had the courage to enter a store since before TG...your description is a 'little' enticing.
Just prepping Santa for the chubby kids, good work. And may he bring what you asked for.
I too would settle for something sweet..you and this fellow will never grow old!! Super poem...
this made me laugh...it's always good to take life lightly at times and find your inner child :) fun piece
Grin. I braved Black Friday madness. But I'm not done and will, alas, have to go to the mall. Not looking forward to it...
Good for you! Never too old to make a wish ;) good one shot....
nice! 'tis this season after all!
Always keeping that smile in tact. That's the way it should be.
Too busy laughing at Matty's comment to think of a witty one of my own.
Nothing plastic or flashy? You have to be kidding. Hahaha! Ah is it Christmas already? I hate the mall.
Whisper in that poor Mall Santa's ear that there are still places in this world where shiny, plastic, frangible and tinny trinkets are unheard of. Places where simple candles and warm hearts light the way to thoughtful conversation and family game nights. Places where the change of seasons is celebrated, the light and the dark are cherished and all mythical creatures are treated equally.
So what did the big boy ask for?
What fun!
I believe in SANTA!
I hope you've been good enough to get what you asked for ;)
Hope you get your wish!
Never to old to believe...a candy cane and a faaaa la la ... and a dream of happily ever after...very nice OSW Brian...tomorrow is
Dec 1st...let the countdown begin...blessings...bkm
Rethinking title on Two Doors after you comment....thanks...bkm
lol nice poem :)
Nothing flashy or mind-numbing. I just want peace, connection, intimacy, friendship, and love. Is this too much to ask?
awe there are so many things to choose from mate lol...
Poor Santa! I hope you didn't hurt his knee.
Lol! :) This is delightful.
I especially liked the red dot saying YOU ARE HERE. :)
I wanna sit on Santa's lap! I want snow for Christmas...or at least weather cold enough to finally use my fireplace...
What? No 5x7 picture a mere $11.99?? You know we all want to see it! :)
Ah! I believe....even when Santa seems to be stuck in a shopping centre full of human cattle !!
...my imagination is now running riot!! Hmmmmm - was your wish naughty or nice - probably both! Bet you really tickled Santa's fancy.
i still believe. hope you get your christmas wish! xo
So awesome! I love how you always fearlessly step outside the boundaries. You split open my imagination.
no wonder you have so many admirers, Brian, I really like and enjoy your stuff.
I also really must check into some of these sites you write for, there's some stuff there which is rare on the web.
well, perhaps after my daily advent windows.
I am sticking with my idea of what you asked for ;)
You know . . . Growing up in my mom's faith . . . I never got to sit on Santa's knee or get my picture taken with him when I was a kid . . . There is a first time for everything, right? And you do only live once, right? Maybe I'll do that this year!
All I want for Christmas is to be able to get rid of my crutches... got rid of the cast last week.
Awesomely nice Brian.
Ah, I haven't been on his lap in many years. Sprightly he wasn't. Portly he was ;).
Well done. . . now pray tell? How Does the jolly old man apply for workman's comp? LOL
I mean with that cracked leg and all, he will have a hard time getting to and from this Christmas!
Good job - hope all your wishes for Santa are fulfilled.
Oh, the things one will do for peppermint!
Shay!!!
Bri- now I know to hide my candy canes from you or they will be stripeless
a falala One Shot
moonie smiles
Santa may not be able o help with that one - it's more of a find it yourself wish.
Love it!! I hope you did this for REALS, Brian...everyone deserves to tell Santa what they want...
(smiles)
Oh too funny. Your inner child is alive and kicking around a shopping mall.
I was a store Santa for a while...lucky I didn't see YOU in line! But you've got the true holiday spirit...it's about becoming a kid again.
And, I hope that you get it, Brian!
How wonderful! I hope you get what you asked for.
Interesting...from human cattle to no one around???
I once made my older sister get her pic taken with me on Santa's lap...we were 16 and 21. I think he thought we were a bit crazy, but oh well.
have you been good?
ok tell us.. what do you really asked santa for?? can't wait for Christmas!!
Very witty. Enjoyed it very much. And judging by the volume of comment I'm not the only one! "Sprightly"...very nice.
oh, I could never do that...
you are funny.
You have quite the following, sir. I'll just quickly say I enjoyed it, especially the image of you sucking away at the candy cane.
Oh this is sooo cute :)
aww, too cute. wook at da big boy on Santa's knee!! Is he dribbling his lolly down his hand onto his shirt? Won't his Mommy/Wifey/Mr Clean be upset with him, but he done look so happy!
Glad to see you in the Christmas spirit Brian! Hohoho
I love how you bring the childlike faith out in your writing at times. Brian....we are NEVER too old to dream and believe! :)
Awesome!
Cattle...yes, that about sums it up. People do tend to take on a bit of that herd mentality as the holiday season rolls around.
Simple pleasures, though, Brian. Seems like you've found one of them. Silly and delightful.
Sweet! While I say, 'to hell with xmas and all that' I loved the encounter between crass commercialism and inner wishes.
I really hope you are feather weight or something.. else, poor Santa! :)
But then you are so sweet that I can bet you will get exactly what you want (for Xmas, I mean).. and NOT get exactly what you DON'T want! :)
Such an "innocent" write, Bri.. sweet!
(grins)
LOVED this.;) Never outgrow the allure of magic and spellbound imagination, right...;)
I am with you on that one.;)
Happy December dear Brian,
xoxo
Don't be lured, don't tell anyone what you wished for... we'll just guess.
lol, you put a very interesting slant on the grotto visit.
Cool poem brian
HE GAVE YOU enchantment and you give it back to us, I like that :)
Just make a list and ensure you write neatly, Then leave it and a pile of cash on the counter and all of your wishes I am certain will come true for you.
Lovely,Brian.Would love to sit on Santa's knees too this year.haha!
Had fun reading this.Nice one shot, friend!
Your post reminds me of when I was a child. We visited a Manchester Store to Meet Father Christmas.I was most confused to find him have a Liverpool accent (think Ringo) and smelling strongly of Whiskey. The thought of him falling down our chimney filled me with dread !
Seasonal Brilliance
I can just picture this. What a great surprise for the store Santa.
You Nasty Boy! LOL!
I agree with Fireblossom: your inner child needs a spanking.
Laughed reading your poem, but there is great (and non fleshy) expectations for the 'season'.
Lady Nyo
Oh myy..that was too cool Brian..haha,i wish you a Merry Christhmas ha! :)
I loved this.....Falalalalala
I loved this.....Falalalalala
I still believe in Santie, too, but it's been a good long time since I've sat on his knee! Maybe I should give that a whirl this year. Thanks for sharing, Brian.
Oh I would have loved to see that!! If only more of us would do such a thing. The holidays would be so much brighter me things!!!
Loved this post!
Hugs
SueAnn

all I want is loveNlight
cheers :)
Oh and I was hoping you'd share your Christmas Wish! lol Great Story. Going to have to go see Santa myself!
Fun poem, Brian. Enjoy the holiday season. Be a kid at heart during this great time of year. Write On!
Boy, I'm sure glad I didn't take that Santa gig at the mall! (LOL!)

too old to believe :) sucking the stripes... so many good lines in this, brian. and what a lot of comments!!
Truly well-done!!! Not sure what age I had realized the fairy-tale role of "Santa" but I imagine this type of placement in mind. However a difficult upbringing never cast the impression of "Malls" in my youth...though I am aware of them, and also with my four year-old, expect maybe...only thankfully right now, still young enough to believe in a concept of one "magical" figure spreading cheer. I believe there are many, however not so much the Santa impression...more the kind people helping each other. As always I love your writing! Glad to have now the chance to read again! :) ~April
LOL! What a sight. You pulled off the poem well. :)
I bet there were bad looks. :)
You make me want to go sit on Santa's knee. Really enjoyed this one--full of mischief.
Lively, child-spirited capturing of mall-based X-mas. Excellent.
I like the lines
walk past the glum faces
too old to believe
and realize that all of us could use a trip down memory lane to days when we were more innocent...
Good light-hearted poem...thanks
We are never too old to believe, Brian. I hope all your wishes come true. ;-)
You are silly :-)
But it's a very cute poem and I like the lightheartedness of it. Is lightheartedness a word?
Wouldn't it be great if the mall Santa really could grant wishes...
Cheers, jj
Aw, you'll never grow up! May Santa bring you everything you want for Christmas!
I am always aware whose work am reading when I get to yours, another brilliant piece
I wrote an mailed a letter to Santa one year along with my daughter who was 4 at the time.
I got what I wanted 2 months later. Nobody knew what I wrote but me.
I LOVE THIS piece , Brian. Love the last stanza especially. you are so talented and such a good blog friend encouraging us all along the way. :)
I hope you get exactly what you want this year!!
too cute...this one made me laugh...it's fun to believe rather than be one of those with glum faces...
I enjoyed it a lot.. thanks
