crunch...crunch...crunch...booted feet on leaves fallen, stain glass shattered beneath trees barren, reaching heaven. maybe them, maybe me.
there is a bear in the woods, protecting her cubs, the announcer's voice on the radio, driving up, sounded like he needed more coffee.
tristan wrestles his bear there at the end of Legends of the Fall, mine might be here in the trees, waiting for me. i have no knife, but what a match it would be, head pressed into the fur of his chest, close enough for synchronized heart beats. unleashed ferocity, pummeling. eustace torn deep to the boy within the dragon. jacob limping.
i am here to find you among the wild untamed mountain top, sheared clean by wind to white rock. i sit & wait.
birds circle lazily, round, round, round.
a black ant crawls atop my perch, touching my finger, continuing on its way.
no bear, but you are here.
pouring myself out, i spill across the stone, runnels dripping in puddles on the thirsty ground below.
a cold finger slips my collar running down my backbone & i laugh.
the mountain air invigorates me, drying my cheeks.
i shiver as you hold me, until it is
time to go, but
i look back as i walk away,
thank you.
crunch...crunch...crunch...

What a blessing you are with your words Brian. Thank you.
Incredible imagery. From wet cheeks, to dry, tears to laughter...you cover what most of experience. Beautiful......
I love nature, but I shall leave those adventures to you.
This is an incredible prose. If you think it is imperfect, I think you should keep refining it and maybe work it into a more formed poem! Great imagery.
:) Nice visons here...
Thats my movie :) My daughters and I love some Tristen
This was grand. I was in the woods with you, a little afraid of the bear but crunching the leaves under my boots. Your creativity is endless. For some reason this resonates with me. Guess I would love to visit the woods, bear and all.
Perfectly imperfect. :)
thanx for taking me along on the adventure. awesome as always friend
This post is so beautiful! And I forgot about that damned movie,I was so in love with Tristan when I was a teenager..can you believe it?Yeah, sure you do :P
Sometimes the bear is within. :) Wow, I so love the way you write. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. And perfect just as it is.
Wonderful and powerful write Thank you
I like, again. Your post makes me think of our last trip up to the Blue Ridge. I think I get it.
Kat
Narnia and Jacob. Is it me, or is there also a bit of Elijah here? Loved it.
got tears in my eyes...brian i loved it...i shiver as you hold me, until it is...this is beyond powerful..and now i need someone to dry my cheeks as well..
I love the woods, crunchy leaves and bears ... as long as they're not too close. =o) This was really nice! Paulette
Hi! Brian...
What a very imaginative Spirited-Journey that you have taken your readers, on...through your words.
Thanks, for sharing!
DeeDee ;-D
Solitude and the beauty of nature win out again over the bear creeping upon our mind. Great word play, B.
nice back to nature stuff.
but legends of the fall...ack what a longwinded pile of drivel
tears, laughter, atumn, nature, the bear... all wrapped up in this adventure. I like it...!
Am I the only stupid one who doesn't know what It means?? :)
There is an allusion entwined here that I have not understood. A bit of name dropping has me lost. Do tell.
now this was a perfectly peaceful moment...
loved the way you have written it ... wonderful imagery ...
Poetic prose. It took me outside of myself. I like when writing does that. Thank you.
Nothing like a brisk walk up a mountain!
I find that this has a different feel from your usual style...I love the new direction. :)

I often find myself whispering a thank you to the natural world.
My husband loves this post. This captures his heart.
And I love it too :) Thanks for sharing your shiver
Oh how I adore your play with the words...a perfect adventurous prose for the season.
God bless ya and have an awesome day!!! :o)
Beautiful Brian! You are such a gifted writer...your soul is so accessible through your words. I am truly looking forward to your post on my blog!!!
I love that movie! How did I forget about the bear? He was an important character.
Beautiful, Brian.
What imagery...what emotion...yet weaved throughout both are some peace, thankfulness, inner smiles/warmth....because yes, even though it was cold there....you were...not...alone...
i hear the echo of our Lord in Jeremiah (again and again)
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD...
and in Kings
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
an encounter with Him...
sometimes we are as jacob, limping from the wrestling. and sometimes we hear His whisper, feel His presence and crunch...crunch...crunch away in our gratitude
:)
Sweet moments of clarity...
I can feel his inner peace - after a direct encounter with something grand like nature, a vulnerable heart, crying the burdens out, to feel the touch of an angel at the end...lovely!!
hugs
I always sound like I need more coffee, hehe! Wonderful, Brian.
stain glass shattered beneath trees barren. loved this.
There is something I love about the sound of leaves crunching beneathe my feet mixed with the cool autumn air. I too, forgot about this movie. Good words Brian.
sounds like a nice little retreat, if even for a moment...
Brian
Love this poem nothing "imperfect prose" about it,love the line "runnels dripping in puddles on the thirsty ground below."
funny how we both had "spirit" in mind when writing our poems...
cheers,
joanny
The crispness of Fall, spending time with Nature....ahhhh so very beautiful.....:-)Hugs
Nothing imperfect about this one, dear Brian.;)
We all fight bears, at one point or another.;) Glad that you found something much better in those woods though.;)
Have a great day dear friend,
xoxo
It is wonderful to commune with nature... it does refresh the soul. Tristan and Jacob? Maybe I should read Legends of the Fall.
OOooo, that's pretty! Very easy to put myself in that setting. Nicely done.
Wonderful imagery, Brian.
"Jacob limping."
Yes, indeed.
Bears wouldn't eat you, they know a good soul when they meet one, but it's ok if you run...it's understood
beautiful verses and story, always
Yes. That's why you go to the mountain top.
Happy to see you're a Narnia fan! That was such a good image.
Wonderful piece!
this poem was perfect brian. i could feel the atmosphere- the suspense.

Oh, how I have missed your stories! I am baaack!!!! :)
Wonderful, Brian. Did you find it or did it find you?
"eustace torn deep to the boy within the dragon."
I love all your metaphors here. I'm currently reading "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" so this one stuck out to me. You're such a gifted artist.
The return to nature is always poignant for me. Thank you.
the crunch of the leaves, the smell of the mountain air, the cool finger under my collar....just gave me the shivers!
Your writing is truly astounding. Truly.
Ahh you pulled me away there to the chapel in the mountains.
stain glass shattered beneath trees barren, reaching heaven. maybe them, maybe me.
grinning off to work!
Di
What an adventure that would be!
the images, the sounds, lost in the moment...
warm smiles,
he often meets me in the mountains too, friend. i need to go there more often. i miss him. beautiful post... his presence lives here in your words.
A-Mazing!
Well, at least the bear will hopefully not be too hungry at this time of year?
Just an awesome poem, Brian, that part about the runnels, and such.
You rock!!
xo
Fun and lovely. You always capture my imagination, Brian.
Very nice. My favorite of the past three (it takes me a while to catch up) is the Missing Persons one. I really like that one. Also, your son's poem is GREAT - apple does not fall far indeed.
"Stain glass shattered beneath trees barren." Nice.
Hated it...left me hanging...too short...didn't like the characters...just kidding. You need to hear something different once in awhile, don't ya think? It was wonderful just like always. :)
I, also, loved the imagery of the "stained glass". Beautiful.
oh, eustace! i will need to read him again, soon, and then to my boys. i think the reading will be much sweeter, what with the years that've passed and learning from prose like yours.
Amazing the weaving of metaphors that you have done, Brian. Jacob limping-we are only strong in His strength. I liked -t-'s comment about "when you seek Him, you will find Him."
You are a gifted writer.
Blessings,
Janis
yes. eustace and jacob. a painful yes.

Close enough for synchronized heart beats. Um, no thank you. But, my, the image it conjures up! Thank you for your expressive nature words. I do so love the outdoors. Blessings!
Nature is a great place to just be...and wait. the imagery, using legends of the fall...all great :)
This resonated with me. Been feeling quite a bit of this myself. Great references you chose with Eustace and Jacob. Being refined is such a painful, but necessary process. From one traveler of the journey to another, here's to the ride. Though tough and painful, certainly never boring :-)
I wouldn't want to walk into a bear!
I haven't seen a bear in the wild. I am sure that mountain top near you has them.
Boys and their bears. Some things never change, do they?
you paint with all the colors of the wind Brian! just got back and I started to read this post first as the title attracted me ... and was I right to start with this post! it just totally resonates with me ... Legends of the fall is one of my favorite movies ... I'm so happy to be able to read your wonderful writings Brian!
