tell me what it was that you dreamed
before your butt became wooden. (petrified)
were you going to be a writer, an artist,
a musician, an astronaut, a cook, a baker
a candlestick maker, what was it?
perhaps you are not following me
i, wood butt, don't have the time
i, wood butt, wait for the right circumstances
i, wood butt, i really don't want to
do it, because i am scared or really
don't want to, but it makes me feel
cool to imagine if it really happened
i, wood butt, makes me want to grow
colonies of hungry termites
to turn loose on the unsuspecting city
we are sitting at this outdoor table
a real piece of work, broken glass
mosaic in soldered iron & this guy
i admire, he writes, putting words together
in ways that make you salivate,
rubbing your eyes in their brilliance
is talking & i am picking his brain
sifting chopsticks through the noodles
for those that have rubbed elbows
with the sesame chicken, wrestling
off the glaze & he says it, "wood butt"
i choke on a fly that tours my
gaping mouth & i wonder when the
last time was that he actually wrote
something new, imagining piles of old manuscripts
he dusts off when he needs something fresh
"there has got to be a better way
than putting people in body bags
before they stop breathing, toe tags
hanging out just to give them a name,"
my words crawl across the table
rattling the door, finding it locked
he looks at me kinda funny, so i say
"never mind, tell me about one of
your stories," the same one as last time
and i feign interest, while i write
this for you, on a slightly soiled napkin.
"waiter, check please."

what a multi layered piece...it has my mind spining..
well done friend.
I think my wood butt is so old it has termites...
I had to read it twice. I hope I'm no "wood butt".
I love the way your poetic mind works. It instigates thought.
freakin' bloody brilliant I say. cheers mate.
I'm going to use 'wood butt' in a sentence today.
Besides this one.
just loved the new phrase "wood butt"
there are so many of us there :)

I was going to be a news anchor woman. Live in a fast paced city, a sleek apartment, great clothes, fabulously looking man etc....but the fact that that "wood butt" didn't materialize is ok. I got the better deal, and a sweet hubby to boot. So I always wanted to write a book and maybe someday I will! Nice "one shot"....:)
Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Love the structure, it adds another layer to the meaning.
still goose bumps... it's just brilliant brian
Smiles to this masterpiece... You really have that picture in your mind and that way to express such situations...
Been asking myself that a lot lately and wondering why I'm procrastinating?!
Brian...AMAZING!!! This has sooo much meaning...Its a reminder...to live life to the fullest...
How disappointing to find him to be a wood butt...I imagine there are a lot of people that we admire that are also GOLDEN members of the Wood Butt Society.
wood butts always affraid to live...to dream high...to use and exploit one's talents...settling down for a safe-boring sketchy version of what should've been. Nicely done, Brian!! great wake up call for us all.
How much wood would a wood-butt butt if a wood-butt could butt wood?
::couldn't help myself: hehe
♥namaste♥
Brian, you ought to put this on Facebook, Twitter, get the kids to act it out or something on Utube. Heck, we all need to think about this, rather than be counted as dead wood while we still breathe.
For some reason "wood butt" makes me giggle like a school girl. LOL!
Reminds me of the scene in Pee Wee's Big Adventure where he is sitting in the mouth of the dinosaur and says, "Every body has a big butt. Let's talk about your big butt." Well played.
How clever. I say this way too much. So many excuses to not do some of those things we desire to do. I wood butt what if everyone thought I was crazy or they laughed at me?
Hope your having a terrific Tuesday! :)
I dreamt myself surrounded by music, wearing faded jeans with holes in the knees, going barefoot whenever I please. I saw myself with long hair, sitting in my art studio, bright white streaming sunlight over my shoulders onto watercolor paper as I paint, in time (yes, it's all mine) to the drumbeat...ever so sweet.
Dream it. Become it.
I loved this B. Meaningful words, brilliant storytelling...

wood butt... I still don't know what to do with my life... so what!
Brilliant - provocative post
cheers :)
You always amaze me, I am in one of those wood butt moments at the moment. Photography being the wood butt...this was awesome Brian...and.." putting words together
in ways that make you salivate," that is YOU my dear!!!
you weave quite a tapestry!

This is very good.
This is a wonderful poem. Clever concept and well written.
wood butt - very clever.
Excellently done.
Definitely sounds like a conversation that I would liked to have been present for. I enjoyed tagging along for this one - always enjoy my time here.
Exceptional word pictures, with a distinctive tone.
Oooh, that hit home a little.
I, wood butt.
But it is sanded and varnished.
Oh Jesus! This is a charmer. It kept my interest all the way through, and I didn't race. I do that when I am befuddled, confused or bored.
This is a keeper, and 'wood butt' is going to be my new word play.
Thank you, Brian for this poem....it cuts deep in most of us...certainly in my experience.
Lady Nyo
Your last two posts are pretty deep, Brian. Nice job. I'm still sifting through them. Maybe a nice nursery rhyme for tomorrow? LOL.
Hey you stole my punchline "I wood...butt" that's always my excuse. Great write as always Bri, top notch!
I was going to be an actress. I wood butt I have no talent.
I was also going to be a rock star. I wood butt my asthma kicks in sometimes and I don't have enough breath to make it through the song.
I was going to be a writer. I could still do that...do blogs count?
Brilliant as always brian, you stir my mind in a very healthy way..:)
Wood butt puts me in mind of "a round tuit" they seem to be constructed of the same stuff and they petrify quicker the older I get. Well written. Thanks, Gay @beachanny
That was great, Brian. The layers and what fun for the mind. :)
Too true, too true. Another thinking man's poem. Very good.
Clever plays on words.
starnge I never knew what I was going to be, have done quite a few jobs :)
I know a lot of wood butts.
wood but - I have been there at times. I have also been in a similar situation only the subject matter was different....:-)Hugs
Laughing at Kim's tongue twister!
i, wood butt = truly inspired!
I'm pretty okay with what I've become. Still a flesh butt.
Leave a comment? I wood butt...This is brilliant on so many levels!
how much wood
would a wood butt butt
if a wood butt
could butt wood?
To paraphrase:
There's this guy I admire. He writes, putting words together in ways that make me salivate. I'm constantly rubbing my eyes in their brilliance. :)
I'd write something but I suffer from "wood butt".
Quite fun, while also being quite serious. And now I can be jealous of you too (nice catalog in the center of the poem there! :)
To butt heads with a wood butt would make me want to say "Check, please", too.
Provocative post.
Learned a new word...wood butt!!Actually am honestly considering the fact that I'm a wood butt.haha.My brain was actually in chaos.
One thing you won't ever do is bore.Your works are always mind moving.Great one shot.
awesome!
I wood comment butt I don't know what to say :)
Very, very clever! I've got to get rid of my wood butt!
Oh, so very true! At times, I have been a wood-butt and I have talked until I am blue in the face to other wood-butts who come up with every excuse in the book of why they couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't do something to get them out of situations they declared impossible...this one was wonderful, Brian and a real eye-opener to your readers I am sure!
My "wood but" sat on my "maybe someday"....:-) Just love the way you get a message of what matters to my heart Brian! :-)
Love this! Who hasn't been guilty at one time or another, but it's always easier to notice when it's someone else. :-)
One mustn't be petrified by laziness and indecision...clever and entertaining piece that really gets at the heart of the matter. Great one shot, brian!
Your imagery and your theme really grab me today Brian. Nice!
Loved the chopsticks in the noodles. Well, I love it all, but that line...wicked. :)
-C
Love that "wood butt" thing. My sister and I had a name that people couldn't pronounce that started with "but" and so we called ourselves "the butt sisters". She was Bertha, I was Martha. Love those butts...sisters and wood!
I think I have been guilty of "wood butt" for a long time but am coming out of it, slowly but surely. Very clever.
We each are so many. I'm thinking, usually, it's way too much. -J
I would imagine a couch potato with a wood butt, but...
Thanks for kicking my wood butt!
oh, I love this, love it - wood butt... come to think of it, that was me for too long :)
Awesome! I think I have a lot of students with wood butts. Really enjoyed this one.
I'm afraid I've been guilty of that! :(
It is brilliant...one of my Brian favorites!
Layers upon layers...butt you knew that already. :)
I was going to leave a comment to justify myself, and decided not to. I, wood butt... well, you know. So I'll just say, awesome piece, Brian. You need have no fear of termites.
brian i think you just kicked a lot of "wood butts" in the butt reading the comments here....let us all get off our butt and follow our dreams...writing, doing, loving...whatever..nice wake up call...bkm
Simply amazing. Had to reread it a few times to sift through all of the different undercurrents.
Please don't let me turn into one of those 'has beens', but not likely 'cos I haven't 'been' there yet!
Wood butt - brilliant!! I know a few wood butts...they make me sad.
The wordplay, layers and meanings kept teasing me until I finally put an end (by understanding it).
Wonderful.
Joy always,
Susan
This made me laugh, you are brilliant! It also reminded me of a small note that was put on the wall in my lab in NC, where it stated: When I get "a round tuit", I will finally do this and this.;) The note offered a round circle as a round tuit.;) So thus people in the lab had no excuses any longer to not to *get around to it*.;)
Have a lovely day Brian and thank you for the kind words on my post today,
xoxo
This is wonderful - deep, funny and true.
Perfect... I would choke on the fly that is touring my mouth.. what a way to say it.. I enjoyed it.
Thanks for your comments on my blog... too

Wish...if only i wood, i cood butt...
How often we are left with kind of a feeling.
Brian thank you so much for your support and prayers dear one.
applaud to your brilliancy from a wood butt here ;-) ... happy day Brian!!
If I can't use wood butt, what CAN I use for an excuse...grins.
I'm still working on the fears of the wood butt...
I haven't given up, I'm just chipping away at the fixed ideas, and praying desperately for a miracle or two to lead the way.
:)
I loved this one Brian. Heck...I love all of your writings! This one is divine. "wood butt"!!! Such truth spoken with tongue in cheek!! The word that comes to my mind is "balderdash"!!
Hugging you
SueAnn
i like the meaning here...wood butt...good one!
I feel - I need to write about books and wood, you are so awesome
That really made me think and read it twice..... id like to thank you Im so using wood butt now in my vocab... !!!!
I guess I'm the exception. I always wanted to be a writer. And I am.
I always wanted to live in the country. And I do.
I always wanted a happy relationship and (took a while, but) I have.
There are things I could wish for. Bit more money, slightly bigger house, better job title.... but actually I got what I dreamed.
No more wood butt for Otin! Good things are happening for him but the blog is not his pathway.
Wood butt. That's great! Another mind-blowing piece, Brian.
Oh my gosh, I love the wood butt!!!! That is pretty clever :)
Another good piece of writing. Thanks Brian
I said an, "oh, oh" when I saw butt in the title. lol
*amn! i'm going to have to read this over again.
multi-faceted diamond--polished of course.
warm smiles,
My wood butt is keeping me from looking for another job. I wood butt, this pays the bills. It's safe.
Thanks for giving me a look at myself.
I wood too, butt.....
Clever poem.
We used to live near a house that had a wooden bench in the front yard and the man who lived there carved a life-sized wooden boy and sat him on the bench, smiling and waving to passerbys.
One day he was gone...the wooden boy, not the man. Someone had stolen him. (damn, neighborhood kids, most likely.)
A few weeks later another wooden boy appeared sitting on the bench, smiling and waving like the other boy did. However, this wooden boy, unlike the first, was chained to the bench... under lock and key.
For some reason, your story reminded me of those wood butt boys who smiled and waved to me as I drove home, so many years ago.
Great one shot!
Incredible... :) lol love the "wood-butt" lines.... ;) April
Ah! That reminds me of the wood butt I got sitting for that 8 hours long exam, for which I didn't qualify!
But the good/ bad news is that NO ONE qualified from the literature section! ;)
Let me make this 100 comments ;D
I must say you have an interesting way with words. I love the wood butt. Sounds like in the end he got all the attention he deserved.
she, what an intersting memory...it intrigued me about the wood boy having to be chained down and speaks volumes of our society...
By far the best read of the day! Turning colonies of hungry termites loose - cracked me up! The entire piece was beyond brilliant!
Brian
This is a fantastic write. I finished feeling very meloncholy. Bothered by my own excuses and bothered by others that bask in what used to be instead of what they could be. It is definitely easier to dream than to do.
Thanks for this
This is great! I think sometimes I suffer from "wood butt". There's so much here- you have a great way with narrative. Thanks so much for sharing this!
great poem sadly i am a "wood butt", :)
I think after 100 comments everything has been said, so I say: nice one shot! ;-)
Ya seem ta have a fixation with butts this week!

This really hit me...hard. Excellent.
you continue to write amazing things...this is breathtaking...a great one shot my firend...pete
Hi! Brian...
Once again, very well-written, and only one word comes to my mind after reading this poem...procrastination.
Thanks, for sharing this poem and By the way, some of your readers, comments are too funny!
DeeDee ;-D
Loved this, and so did my 15 yr old son.
"before I became a wood butt" will be our fave expression around here, to get things done...
My wood butt has definitely grown roots.
Fabulous piece. One to think on, over and over again.
I love how you choose your words, the words are simple, no bloody heavy words that needs dictionary or to explained. Only words that needs an open mind that know-how to reflect and smile. Very very beatidul lines.
