Well meaning,
they taught you a tree
was a circle on a stick &
your body, just as thin,
but look out that window,
look at your neighbor;
real life has texture.
Say it in 160 characters (spaces included) then go tell Monkey Man.
I drew this earlier in the week, while teaching the 2nd graders how to draw a tree. It is Sharpie markers on the back of a worksheet. (Nothing but top quality art supplies here, lol.)
So I will toss it into Sunday Sketches as well with my good friend Sophia.

Brian...you are truly a "Renaissance Man". I don't care what art supplies were used or what medium, this tree has perfect character. Yes. True life does have texture.
Oh...do I get to shout "Yahtzee"?
If I did my own illustrations, I would either lose all my readers or have to be a comedy blog. ;-)
Great work with the drawing and the Sunday 160. Thanks for playing.
And you draw too???? Dang.
I was mesmerized by the picture. Cannot believe you also draw. What CAN'T you do?
I love this Brian and the tree as well it's wonderful plus it has magical glitter, now that's my kind of tree ;)
so you paint with words AND colors - i'm deeply impressed. the tree is beautiful and i like how the leaves fly away like a wedding veil
Wonderful 160 complemented beautifully by your drawing :o)
I love the tree as well Brian!
It always makes me laugh when people marvel at "HD T.V.".Life ,Itself, is High Definition!
real life has flesh and substance... i love the smooth flow of words here. a deep message in just 160 words. great job, brian! :)
how i wish i have the talent to draw a tree as pretty as that. :)
Very nice -- terrific tree too. One of the first thing in drawing is to learn to draw what you see, not your kindergarten teacher's idea of it.

nice autumn tree, my friend! Wonderful 160!
Well done my friend. We are more, and a tree is more, but to say it all would take a lifetime. .....So the simple explanations seem to work?
You have the soul of an artist.....so very talented in all ways. God has surely blessed you richly. Wonderful drawing and 160.
Mine is up.

Brian, do we still draw us as thin 'stick-Peeps?--grin, I wish!
Yes, it is wonderful you teach how to observe the beauty in all creatures--that Great Reality deep down within.
What a 'happy'-looking tree, you Sir, are AMAZING!
The jump from page to life is jolting, yes? -J
LOVE THIS!
Beautiful drawing.. love the autumn leaves flying away...
You are amazing Brian. How you can write and say something that makes sense in just a few words.Lovely tree too no matter what you used.I can sketch its just the two, writing and sketching I cant do,lol.

Well, wasn't there a famous artist who drew on table napkins? Is there no end to your talents, Brian?
Great tree Brian!! I am trying to teach my first graders how not to draw stick figure (and I am def. not an artist)
Both are beautiful, Brian!
Cool 160 and story behind it. Nice!
that's a pretty terrific sketch and the 160 went perfectly along with it :)
I love kid drawings of anything - but trees make for good subject matter. Neat sketch and neat l60, Brian.
Wow! The tree is lovely and so are your words. It's nice discovering your many dimensions and talents.
Much better artistry than I could ever do. I draw stick figures for people.
You can do it all, can't you! This tree is wonderful! My art teacher required us to have sharpies as one of our materials that we used. We used them quite often too. I love the reality of art. You can have it anyway you want...stick figures, round, any way is right! Beauty in all of it.
"real life has texture" - exactly; I read layers and layers of meaning here... Amazing 160 and drawing!
People have such a way of flattening things to the most simple.
Well it tossed itself in the air then swirled around like a leaf and came down to land!
I remember trying to teach some 10 year olds to draw a tree when I did a school placement. It's so interesting how they never really look at a subject but just refer to what is stored away in their memory as 'tree'. I was trying to get them to look at shape rather than tree but perhaps they were a little young!
Gah, should have known! You've got The Talent Gene.
Very nice, Bri.
Some days, I wonder what you CAN'T do, Brian. :)
-C
I would frame that and display it in my foyer. I can't draw a crooked line but someone has to be able to play the piano! I am going to attempt my first 160 today. My life has texture today... :-D
♥namaste♥
Nicethoughts. How true!
My first Sunday 160: Sunday 160
Wow - you can write and draw!! Very impressive!! :)
yay, glad to see you at Sunday Sketches. Good stuff. I like your tree, and Sharpie work! happy sunday to you.
That talent seems to have no end!
Sharp work, Brian...both the words and the drawing.
Great 160 and nice drawing too! :-)
You say so much with so few words. It is beautiful Brian.
I really like the tree as well!
Nice message on this one.
think outside the box...great message! and super cool sketch! I would frame it if I were you.
ok - that's fantastic! Love the blowing leaves! I hope you are teaching your grade twos art too!
the words are wonderful with your top quality art supplies wonderful sketch. good to know you are not a teacher suggesting a circle on a stick for a tree.
Great art. I can't draw for toffee, although I can manage a few straight lines every now and then. Liked this one.
what a great sketch...and advise!
Thank goodness for texture.
Brian, that is so cool. I love the sketch and the poem. As far as that goes, I love trees!
That is a wonderful tree and the medium used could not have been better, love your words that went along with this as well.
Such a strong message in only 160 characters.
The tree...you totally rock! Wow! I clicked on the image to get a bigger view. I can't believe that's just Sharpies!
Lovely tree!
Lucky 2nd graders to have such a teacher!
So glad you joined in the sketching! (All you needed was a sharpie - it's great!)
I love the line:
"real life has texture."
great drawing
and very true
life is real
Very nice tree!!!! If I had a second grade teacher who could draw like that maybe I'd have learned how to draw too :-)
Cheers, jj
I can't see the drawing clearly but I like the shape and colors
excellent artistry :) have a great week mate.
Ohhh I really like your tree and the autumn leaves blowing off it! :0)
Okay, your talents are starting to sicken me. Just kidding. Just kidding! :)
xo
Whoa, Brian, you are an artist in more ways than one!
Really a wonderful drawing!!!! :-)
Lovely, both poem and drawing.
I see I shall have to keep a closer eye on you.
Man of many talents!!!!
It certainly does.
You are an artist! So much we bloggers miss about eachother. I was adding a post-script to explain my 160 as you were commenting, if you want to reread it, thanks for following,
you should teach painting a sunset on watercolor paper, then draw the silouhette of the tree with the sharpie....very impressive to the 2nd graders...
Di
Well! That sketch is exceptional! I think it earned a magnet place on the fridge or BETTER!
Great 160 as well!
Well I'm glad yo know you can draw -you will illustrate my next book right???
Brian you are more than just a stick figure to be sure
Moon Smiles
Brian, this is so sweet to me. I watched my son in art class one day, learning to draw a tree. He was learning to see, really. Very special.
So typically Brianesque....
You can draw too! Too talented:)
Oh I love it! Another artist who renders in Sharpies on copypaper. Awesome. I need that lesson in trees myself. Trees & hair are the worst for me to render. This has a very Asian feel, peaceful and serene.
Thanks for your comments on my Sunday post. I appreciate the vaildation on the lines between horse and rider and grateful to know that they translated their intended meanings - I can now officially quite stressing about whether my horse is too fat!
Have a great one!
Hello Brian:)
Lovely drawing.
It requires great imagination to teach children and it looks like you have mastered the art of teaching and drawing.
Best wishes:)
Joseph
Wait. You write beautifully AND have the ability to draw like that? Holy moley! When God was handing out talent, I must have been in the bathroom!
79 comments on your first Sunday Sketch submission?!?!? You TOTALLY suck, dude!!! :D LOL Just kidding...actually, I'm not, but hey! hee
I am seriously impressed with your drawing, Brian. I bet you had loads of fun with those 2nd graders. I know I would have. :) Thanks so much for participating this week. Sure hoping you stay with us. Such an inspiration you are.
Sir, I find the Contents of this blog Highly Objectionable and your remarks upon the blog of the fair Lady Lorraine pernicious and irascible. Withdraw!

what????
You can draw, too???
thud.
why percy i think you are suffering from in jest ion...but we don't jest about that around here...
Is there no end to you talent Brian? I love the tree drawing.....:-) Hugs
Well said, Brian, and well-sketched also!
You are not just an poet, you are an artist too.;) I love that drawing, there is motion in it, my favorite subject to draw and paint.;)
Have a great Monday dear Brian,
xoxo
Forget the writing...move to art!
Well the sketch is fabulous!! So expressive! Just fabulous!
And you are so right! Life and people are full of texture and dimension!! So much to consider!
Hugs
SueAnn
Dear one I am impressed. You have talent. Blessings.
Yes, and that texture comes across so beautifully in your poetry and your sketches. The children are lucky to have you as a teacher.
Multi-talented!This is so so nice!Wish I could draw too.
You are a man of many talents aren't you Brian!!! This is for sure a tree of great texture. Nice picture & very true words. Lovely as usual!
so you master proze, story telling, poetry, emotional intelligence
and also arts!!!! wow, how many times did you go stand in line when talents got distributed :p?
Brilliant! Something that must be shared with doctors!
I wish I had learned how to draw from someone who could actually teach it. Where were you when I was in the second grade. Oh right.. not even born yet. ;)
Great sketch! I simply love trees, they are constant in an ever changing world. The huge one that stands in front of our house is bare, but their is still beauty in her swaying branches.....
Love the poem and the tree Brian, especially that the leaves are gently floating away in the breeze.
Brian, I just read your comment about one shot. Thanks for your recognition. Life has so many surprises. I've been writing for many years (mostly for myself). Once I started writing a children's book in rhyme, but I never considered it poetry, maybe it was. Anyway, I am so grateful to have found poetry and you, because I discovered it through you. We never know how we can influence others by just being ourselves and following our bliss. That's what you do.
wow... thats a damn good tree
You are so right...real life does have texture!
Hope your Monday is marvelous. :)
lovely 160. Migraine is gone - thanks for stopping by as always. Trees are my favorite thing in nature. Yours is a great work of art - very "sharp"
Fantastic 160 and the drawing is beautiful! I love the way you can make such a simple idea into something so terrifically profound. :)
Great drawing and your words are wonderfully posed...
Nice addition to the sunday bunch!!
Smiles and thanks for stopping by and your nice comment.
Nice tree. I like the branches. I'm of the opinion that the best sketches are ones drawn on the backs of worksheets with highlighters and pens. The stress to make it perfect is gone, therefore they usually turn out better.
How did the second grader's drawings look?
Liking the art work!!
okay, now I'm jealous.
I can't even draw a stick tree.
I love this.
Texture indeed....awesome!
"real life has texture"
the feeling from experience is
that texture, and it is
unlike that which is taught, though "well meaning" as you say.
something like that anyway.
I love the tree. I have quite a collection of Sharpies myself.
I know of no one else, past or present, who can weave such a vivid and poignant tale in so few words.
Brian, I don't know if you accept awards, but if you do, I have one for you over at my place.
"real life has textue"--how very true adn well put indeed. And Hey, I thought you couldn;t draw at all? this is great! Love it. how wonderful an interpretation. Trees can be so fun to draw.
Can't decide which has more beauty...the tree painting you did or the words you weaved....
You draw too?? Amazing!
