recorder to our lips,
we blew songs
like 'hot crossed buns'
before we knew
double entendre or
been to Daytona
on Spring Break,
gaining experience,
enough to understand
subtle meanings
behind words &
things &
our music, like
our conversations,
was simple & easy
(nothing hidden
in between)
as simple as
BAGBAG GGGG AAAA BAG
Tell a story in 55 words. Give it a try or just read more, go see G-man.
Do they still teach recorder in school? I guess I will find out with the boys. This was inspired by my blog friends claudia, steveroni and j, who play and write so eloquently about it. the capital letters there at the end are the notes for 'hot crossed buns'.

I've yet to get to Daytona, but seen it on t.v. Does that count?? :)
Lovely! Reminiscent of so much, Brian.
xo
They do! My son's was soon traded for an American Indian flute ... -J
The didn't teach recorder when I was in school....:(
Oooh...flash back to a year and a half ago and Nathan's third grade recorder unit. I had tried to block that out! ;)
Hot Crossed Buns. Constantly. Overandoverandoverandover. Yeah, awesome. LOL!
So here...yes, they still do recorder in school, and still use that oldie to introduce it.
Oh yes, I remember those simple, carefree, uncomplicated days.
But it was so cool to have one, and to play one, and don't blow too hard otherwise you hit those screechy octaves that probably weren't meant to be played! Brings back memories of the same elementary I wrote about in 'One Morning', what a coincidence! Good poem man.
Great piece, Brian. The loss of innocence comes with age and it indeed happens to us all. But how simple life is before it. I love "Hot Cross Buns" - such a simply and yet infinitely uplifting tune :)
I had totally forgotten about learning the recorder! I think I was in third grade, maybe? I probably have it buried in a box somewhere.
Such a nice memory from when things were truly "simple and easy."
I used to love my recorder. Thanks for the happy memories this brought.
I remember those recorder days!
Hot Cross Buns...hehehe
Nice walk down Memory Lane Son...
Excellent as always.
But Really Brian....
I hate to call a Man of Faith a name but....You are THE biggest Blog Whore in the History of Blogdom, and I've been around a bit. And you show up commenting at the strangest sites. It was just yesterday that I saw you First on Charles Manson's Blog. Then Britney Spears!
Love ya brother...
Have a Kick Ass Week-End...G
I'm heading to Daytona in one week! ...and I remember the recorder :) Nice 55!
haha. g-man you got me in stitches...that will be $25 please...
Simple and Easy like our conversations.
Yup, I remember when life was like that...
Thanks for the trip back
Good stuff - music I can actually read!
Ugh, BAG<BAG BAG...I can see a whole lot of hidden words you boys tried to get away with...
They didn't teach it when I was in school either. Oooo I'd love to go to Daytona. Very nice my friend. Excellent writing as usual. Have a great Friday :)
My kids both took recorder in school, didn't have them when I went to school.....love what you can do to with a memory Brian.
.......:-) Hugs
I am driven by music....
Daytona? What's that? ;) hehehe
Happy weekend to you and yours, Brian!
Big jump from recorders to Spring Break! Who else could fit those two things in 55 words? You're amazing.
lol! I was transported back to school and I can hear the uneven, horrible notes as I type this. Never made it to Daytona - spring break was a mild affair back in my day. Really enjoyed this 55, Brian!
Oh, man, did you send me way back in time! Strange, how some things can be pushed so far back in your memory, only to resurface many years later.
Oh yes. All three of my now teens did the recorder for school for a few years. Thank GOD it's over, lol! Great, now I'm gonna hear that sound in my head all night. Thanks Brian! lol
based on the responses thinking maybe 'don't blink' by kenny chesney as the soundtrack for this one...smiles.
Yes they do...at least around here they do. All of my kids were taught lessons with the recorder and they were so proud. A little annoying to listen to them practice but they sure had fun. And that's what it's all about! :)
now I am trying to figure out the double entrende of the hot crossed buns!
I agree, we sang with full throated ease such rhymes that we could not comprehend completely!
Ummm...recorders?!?! :D hahahahaha JUST teasing. Let me know if your boys bring one home! Hee :)
what a lot of memories THIS brought back! recorders and xylophones in elementary school, ah yes, i remember it well.
yes life has been complicated now
Kids in Sweden learn the recorder, but I don't think it's during school but as an extra -curricular activity. My kids play the violin.
Delightful :)
We learned recorder and then progressed to ukelele. OMG, how does someone who loves music enough to earn a degree in it, tolerate a roomful of ten-year-olds blowing on recorders or banging away on ukeleles?! Sounds like a vicious kind of hell LOL. What memories this stirred -- thanks Brian!
I have no idea what recorder is but i still enjoyed this write !! sometimes simple talks are the best to happen !
I enjoyed this.
I had a recorder but it was sold during one of the more cathartic moments in my life.
Have a nice day, Boonsong
No recorders in school in our day, but the more recent ones have them.
..nothing hidden in between...sometimes the words, you put in brackets are the ones that hit me most. love how you write about music - and you know what - playing the recorder is an excellent first step into playing a sax...smiles
Oh, to capture, again, a bit of that innocence.
Excellent.
What a great recollection of school years that differ so from mine.;) I do not even know what "teaching recorder" means.;)) And there sure were no spring breaks when I was young.;))
Have a great Friday Brian,
xo
Glad you explained that last line. I thought it was a subliminal message to get to the bakery.
I think I was banished to triangle - recorder far above my pay grade. If you want to hear (yes hear!) or read my Friday 55 Flash fiction then click here. Hope you have a good weekend!
Those were the days, my friend. I haven't been to Daytona. From Columbus, GA, we went to Panama City,FL - it was only a four hour drive.
Mine's at:

what's happenng in daytona?
We make everything so complicated as we mature - and lose sight of the simple and best.
When I think of the recorder I always think about Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones playing it on Ruby Tuesday. Thanks Brian for sharing your great 55. Blessings.
I think "Hot Crossed Buns" was the 1st song I learned on the clarinet as well! Loving it. And yes, I think some schools are still teaching recorders in their early elementary music education, that is if funding for the arts aren't cut (always the 1st thing to go)
Oh the Recorder and Hot Crossed Buns. I too forgot about them. Brings back awkward and good memories.
Thanks Brian
Hugs
SueAnn
Great writing. It looks like you touched on a nerve with this one, so many people relating to the recorder. I have one I have carried around in its little plastic case for many years.
:@hot cross buns...That was all I could play on my recorder in school lol
Mine is here
http://msjstar1275.blogspot.com/
Enjoyed this, though my son bangs out Shine by Collective Soul on his drum set! Played with him last night!
a bit lost on the 'recorder' here, no such thing there where I went to school :-) ... but I like the easy and simple conversation, yes this one I do understand :-) happy weekend Brian!
Around here the schools seem only to teach how to take tests. Tragic...
Recorder, oh yeah - never got the chance-
I carried a flute around until it disappeared, piece by piece- Thanks!
( my 55, is on top at home)
Sounds like a drunk demanding back his brown bag with the bottle inside...
BAGBAG GGGG AAAA BAG
(I remember playing that one!)
You're words are true. Things seem inevitably to be corrupted.
I'm choosing to read between the lines on this one, Brian. There's a hidden meaning in here somewhere, I'm sure... ;)
I still have my recorder....
Simple days! Magical.
simple magical easy days..great 55
This one is fun and sweet! And, yes, they still teach recorder!
Son plays the recorder in music class and also the trumpet after school. I love the music!
Hello Brian:)
Hot cross buns is one of the early nursery rhymes which I learnt when I was in the nursery class. I was so proud to come home and sing to my parents. My parents were thrilled and whenever we had some visitors in the house, I was called to sing this song for them. Wonderful days they were. I was the center of attraction.
Your lovely writing transported me to those wonderful days.
Best wishes:)
Joseph
Even the recorder is too difficult for me.
ha ha... BAGBAG GGGG AAAA BAGBAG...
like that,,,
lovely one
(nothing hidden
in between)...those were the days.
You have a way of reminding me of feelings I had almost forgotten about.
I thought Spring Break was for kayaking. But I'm sure if someone gave me a recorder at that age, I'd have said, "bag that!"
hi Bri...that was sweet..a touch of innocence still remains within that mind of yours eh!!! very well worked ..i did the recorder at school too..the joys of early life..experiences and discovering...cheers Pete
Never been to Daytona or played a recorder ... but I do remember innocence ... and the loss of it. So, poem understood and appreciated. Good 55 - Thanks!
Well done-i like it.
Ah, those were the days when everything was simple. ;)
Brought back memories!
More than the music and conversations, I think WE (and our minds) worked simple and easy :)
You really seem to be on a flashback mode these days, Brian :) The kids are sure making you think up stuff.. hehehe
Lovely 55!
I think some schools still do, but at my kids' school they started on their real instruments directly.
i loved my recorder... i learned it in 3rd grade and i still know the hand placements for three blind mice////LOL
How playful this one is...I never experienced spring break.
and yes, they still teach recorder in school:)
have a fab weekend Brian ~ smiles back.
I remember both Alex and Sam having a brief stint with a recorder in third grade. So that means Gracie will bring one home this year. I play piano, but violin is my favorite to listen too.....great 55 and I hope you have the bestest weekend!
Did everybody learn Hot Crossed Buns in the key of G?
Lord, if I had a dollar for every band recital I'd sat through and heard Hot Crossed Buns!
Brilliant as always!
Yes, they do still teach recorder in school. Be prepared for it! Apparently my son required a lot of home practice. Either that or he just enjoyed making the racket.
I remember that very well mate, great memories induced by your fun poem, happy weekend mate.
So much was known I think... Despite that *Nothing hidden in between...*
;)
oh, brian! this was not only so much fun to read but i was suddenly covered with a wave of nostalgia! i never did learn to read the notes but i can STILL play 'mary had a little lamb' on the recorder...had to borrow it from one of the grands just to make sure i got it right ;)
I don't remember recorders but I should, I'm sure. Love the verse, as usual.
This is really nice Brian!Wishing you a nice weekend :)
They still teach the recorder to school children in my neck of the woods. Your 55 brought back memories of my own childhood though... Wonderful!
What a great flash back to innocence and carefree childhood. Awesome!
one-a-penny, two-a-penny...
The recorder, the beginning of everything. Nicely done.
Recorders are so much fun. I hope they do still teach them to kids.
Lovely music of the memory, simple and easy to listen to as you play it with words.
Ah the innocence that is lost with time.
We've got a couple recorders in the house, mostly giving me headaches. :)
don't you love nostalgia - you get everyone talking about third grade or the song they played...
Nice my friend
and yes I remember Daytona well. coming from the other coast, I was shocked to see a flat beach that went on forever along with cars forever
I think that I still have my old recorder from school.
No recorders in Catholic school. Now rulers....those were another story.
They definitely teach recorder. Both my boys had it in 3rd grade. Got up at chapel and played Amazing Grace with no music. (I'm a clarinetist, so very proud of this stepping stone.) Loved this 55. And g-man cracked me up...
P.S Been gone just a week and all of a sudden your comments are on approval??? Was it something I said ;-)
