i am not
some fast food joint
name in lights
drive by window
where you can
get it your way
right away...
nor am i a
buffet where you
pick and choose
only what you want,
taking samples,
on overflowing plates...
no, i am more
pot roast simmering,
slow cooking in its
shared juices, set to
melt in your mouth...
but only if you
take your time
and let it happen...
i can promise you
it's worth the wait
and if you are
still hungry
there are seconds.

I definitely prefer eating at home than anywhere else. Mother is such a great cook I am very blessed.
I would love to know the inspiration for this poem, Brian. It was terrific! The food comparisons are brilliant.
Mmmmmmm...buffet!
But pot roast even better; I can smell the slow cooker now :P...
innuendos aside ;)
I have some flexibility on this one - from a slow-cooked meal to take-out. They all have their charms. :)
This is a perfect description of most wives. We're crockpots. Men, on the other hand, tend to be microwaves. Beep!
Another great one, Brian!
Hehehe...
Subtext at its best. ;)
I really like this...witty and concise, speaks volumes.
Oooooh la la. Something good brewing in that pot!!!
Oh my that was mouth-watering and enticing. I always think of myself as a delicious slice of moist chocolate cake, but I might have to start thinking of myself as pot roast. Yum!
Oh! Delicious! Gotta love the subtext.
Wishing you and your lovely family, a beautiful July 4th!
:) Very clever take on a classic standby! Nothing standby about you.
I agree with Marla!!
I love this!!
'there are seconds' nice!
Terrific. Love the analogy - this really is about the food of love! Smiles.
Love this Brian, there is nothing like home cooking. Have a great 4th of July weekend. take care.
Nothing beats a home cooked meal with family and friends, although take out and restaurants do have their days.
Hey, good lookin', can I order a la carte? :-) Have a great holiday weekend, Brian!
OOOo, very sexy!
There is much one could draw from this, but I will refrain from inference, and simply say, the implications are sundry. :)
Well done.
Just Say'n
This is a winner for me, Brian. Clever of you to make comparisons with cooking.
I liked this cooking analogy. And boy, it's all fast! Waiting and conjuring up taste buds is but forgotten. Food is food any time! Blame it all on the moods.
Joy and peace,
Susan
Mouthwatering writing, Brian.
I prefer eating at home, but I do not cook, so whatever I eat will mostly be frozen this and frozen that. Thanks Brian.
There is something to be said about patience, enjoying the delights of cooking. I hope it does not become a lost art among the young fast food junkies?
Joanny
I think you know, we would all come back for seconds, thirds and forths. Gluttonously happy to do so.
I love this! It reminds me of my kitchen. I get so irritated when dinner is about to be ready say in 15-20 minutes and the family (re: Mr. Sister) decides to snack on tortilla chips and salsa. I hid them when I made my famous Greek chicken dinner last week...and he had to agree...the wait was worth it! Ha!
This was great, Brian. The food descriptions were brilliant. I am hungry now.
I was reading on a cooking site that if one browns the roast before putting in the croc pot then it turns out 100 times. After reading your story about what's cookin has made me actually want to try it. I will have to see. We have pretty much stopped eating at fast food places and only go out a few times a month to a restaurant.
Hubby likes to smoke some meat on Saturday or Sunday and then eat it during the week. It works out pretty good. Or we just eat a lot of sandwiches and soup. I need to make some homemade soup. Brocolli soup sounds so good.
Oh and you could cook for me whenever you want, it sounds so good.
God bless.
Oh, yeah! I'd take seconds. You're definitely a pot roast kind of guy!
Nice write. Good to see men that cook. I do cook myself.
Dang Brian. I mean..... daaaaaang! Those are some sexy words you got going in that crockpot, baby.
Delish.
Okay..now i want pot roast..lol....happy 4th weekend my friend!!!!
As I read this, I kept thinking of something I always have said to my kids, "Do you think this is a resteraunt?" :) We seldom eat out and it is rare that it would be at a fast food place. I love my crockpot and have found so many things to make in it. Actually I think I like cooking in general....as long as I got lots of good veggies and the like to cook with. :)
Yes, good things come to those who wait. Hungerally. (is that a word?) lol.
p.s. as a germaphobe I dislike buffets. I've seen too many people cough over them, sneeze near them and pick their nose and then pick up a communal serving spoon.
BLEH! I have to Purell just thinking about it.
Yowza!! Sizzlin'! Oh, were you talking about food?
a tasty treat today mate :) good post, happy weekend
Love this!
Isn't everything in life better when taken a little slower to enjoy?
Love the flow of this one today my friend. I'll be sure to buy you flowers first.
techno...of course its food, smiles.
I was just reading a more serious post about the meaning of love and nowhere in it was a pot roast mentioned but I think it should have been. Unless of course, one is a vegetarian... your quirky mind and your way with words keep me in a perpetual state of delight.
Do you remember?
"hey, goodlooking! What 'cha got cookin? How's about cookin' something up with me? I got a hot rod car and a two dollar bill, I know a little place just over the hill. If you wanna' have fun, come along with me! Hey, goodlooking, What 'cha got cookin'? How about cooking up a brand new recipe?"
You are probably too young to remeber that song. For some reason your poem brought it to mind.
A meal, prepared together...at home, relishing in company that will last a lifetime...this is indeed the best choice for me and my beloved. Your views past the ordinary are not simply enlightening, but engaging.
Just fantastic. :)
You've done it again...linked something that we all totally understand (food) and made it sexy with double entendres (sp). I LOVE how you do that! Food for thought!!!
Mmmm. Sexy.
Happy 4th, Brian!
Brian, Brian, Brian -- you just get better and better (like leftovers ;-))
I have always thought of cooking with someone you love in the kitchen as a dance....food is sexy, and you just proved it...well done my friend.
Well, you know me...same idea!
Wow! Speechless!
Only if you take your time and let it happen..
Brian - I've been reading it over and over - fighting down the heatwaves - but it's so true - thanks!
lol ok lol Brilliant Brian lol
:) Makes me think about what I am...
Finally, I got to your blog. The blogger is playing Truant today!
Wow! That is a great dish...a delicacy rather! :)
I love the reference to food & appetite here!
Did you bring it in from Buff's Blog? :P
meaty!
I loved this both on the surface and the levels below. Sorry for the pun, but I don't know how else to say it: this is great food for thought.
I love the delayed gratification aspect of this one...it truly is worth the wait...Heartspell
Many lines of message here Brian, patience, love, and a promise of tommorrow all for taking the time to cook over instant gratification....Happy Fourth...bkm
I don't even know what that's like. I've been a bachelor for too many years now. . . . :)
Ha, love it. I am a crock pot...worth the wait...
I loved this metaphor, Brian. So clever, and it works perfectly. As always, your words are a delight :)
so playful and tasty. terrific imagery.
"ummm food"
[in best Homer Simpson voice]
...and thirds and fourths....and fireworks?
Are you sure you're not a woman?
i promise...though i do try to learn...
Well spoken, as usual! Thanks for casting a vote in my little contest. I will be posting the results tomorrow. 28 won by one vote when I added the written ballots. It was interesting to see the perception of the photos and the perception of actually seeing the site. I was trying to be very careful with site N and didn't post all the pictures I took. She is such a sweetheart and I will confess to you that her site, in reality, looks like a confused explosion of flowers and statuary! I was very careful because she reads my blog faithfully and I could not bear the thought of anyone saying anything negative about it. It would have crushed her.
I wish more would take the time to "just let it happen" instead of wanting the "fast food"! Great post; this is kinda what I've been feeling all week!
Smile, again. Haven't had a good pot roast in years.
Kat
This one left me with a big smile on my face--then I read it to hubby. It made for great reading between the lines.
Thanks for your kind comments on my "feeling blue" post. I really appreciate it.
Have a fab pot roast-filled weekend.
jj
That was meta4, 5 AND 6! Great poem. Got me hungry for some good home cookin'.
Hmm food and sex. What could be sweeter. Oh there I go reading too much into things again.
whoa, look out, that's hot!
Now I am freakin hungry! Thanks! lol
nice homage to home cooked meals lol
With a juicy potroast, who needs to go anywhere? Are you telling us that you are steady and slow, like a good potroast? If we are known by the food we eat, I'm hopelessly slobbering a pizza pie.
Very nice!
being someone who loves to cook, you got my attention right away- this was so well written!! how i would love to sit across the table from you and share a pot of coffee, listen to your heart, and hopefully discover what it is that gives you this depth of life...and, to thank you for giving some of it away every time your pen hits the paper :)
My elderly Dad is of the generation that never cooks. My mother says she's never cared because any of his offerings are always shrivelled anyway. After reading your poem, I really, and I mean REALLY don't want to read much into what she's disclosed about life in their kitchen (or elsewhere)!
Very good, Brian, and thought provoking! Love your descriptions, yum.
Oh Brian, I love this, just up my alley!
I choose this and that on your groaning board..and If I'm still wanting, I know where to find you!!
Such a terrific original..thanks for the nibble!!
There are days, Brian, when you are definitely fine dining, elegant and beautiful, and I feel I have come to the table underdressed.
Kinda like the carnitas I have simmering on the stove, ready for this Fourth of July feast. Ummm, nothing says it better than slow cooked. What a nice post.
Brilliant!
Mmmm, Mmmmm, Good !
Whoa. That is compelling too. I can guess at who you might be referring to, if not yourself, but not sure, and I like that certain ennui.
Oh MAN! Am I hungry!
Fantastic...love it:)
I am a pot of chili simmering. Nice analogy.
Great analogy. Loved the meaning behind the food stuff...giggles. I've been a fan of slow cooking for some time ;-)
Gee thanks . . . Now I'm hungry and lunch time is no where in sight! ;)
Your writing leaves the reader with wanting so much more. You have a great skill going here.
Yowzer! And THAT, my friend, is why I love to cook! Ha ha!
Beautiful brian..Loved this post..loved the lines...
Loved the hidden metaphor and the ambiguity of interpretation...
Cheers n keep writing beautifully :)
Btw, nt to be seen much these days, especially on a particular forum?hope all's well...take care
And I do mean FOOD. :)
I like your style, I'm sure I'd love your cooking!
I love the comparisons. Right on!
I am just reading your old posts and I really like this (among many others). I actually enjoyed reading one post about your sons (forgot which month), and I wrote a post from that.
I also see that your writing has evolved to what I am reading now. Sorry to dig up this old post...I just enjoy reading archives :smiles:
