behind the scenes

it has been 367 posts since my last award post. i typically don't do them, (as was pointed out by the grantor) but i am making a special exception (because she got her cohort to bludgeon me as well...smiles) really, i have enjoyed getting to know these two wonderful ladies, through their writings...

Me... is a great blog friend and a reality check for me. she blends the everyday with some wonderful poetry and stories, particularly for 55's on fridays. she always has a kind word when she stops in, always leaving me me smile.

Kkrige...tells some of the most amazing stories about her trip to Africa. really you should go read them now. she also writes some wonderful poetry and has been a great encourager of mine.

i am supposed to tell you seven things about myself...i honestly wonder what i could tell you that i have not already...most of my stories revolve around what happens in my life...sometimes i do throw a twist in there...but 90% come directly from experience...even the creepy ones, i just crank it up a notch...it is all in how you paint the detail with your words...

i used to paint quite a bit...mostly watercolor...and won a few awards. i have always loved writing though...but i let it go dormant for about 18 years...which is about the same time i have 'gone commando'...but i think that had little to do with it...although it does bring up some great debates with the boys on why they need to wear underwear...i just don't like to be restricted...

kinda like not being able to sell our house and having to move back...i really struggled with that...sometimes i still do...and feel like my life has been in a long stall...it has given me the opportunity to explore my writing though...and the bills are up to date...not having reliable internet at the house though really bites...

i will eat just about anything, once...king cobra...hagis...matter of fact the only thing i wont eat is lima beans...force fed them as a kid...bleauck! my boys are about the same...they just cover it in a ranch dressing/ketchup mixture...which is a little gross when they put it on their green beans...
so i figure there are seven in there somewhere...just in case..i can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue...we will leave it at that...and i like to listen to music while i write...particularly the ONCE soundtrack and anything by pearl jam...and if you read all the way to here, you deserve an award...

I truly enjoyed this very personal post of yours.;))
I love learning about your paining skills.;)) And I too will eat anything once.;) Even rotten and spoiled food, gosh. (That was without my knowledge though, but shows that I am not picky.;))
Have a great Saturday Brian and congratulations on your awards, well deserved,

Woo hoo Brian. Congrats. I could never paint. Had even trouble staying in the lines when I colored. I freak out if a banana has a little bruise on it. Thank you for sharing dear one. Blessings.

Aww!! I am so pleased that you played along! The little details that you peppered this post with were wonderful. Just the kinds of bits and pieces that make up a person and help you to know them better.

Thanks for saying such nice things about me, too! You're a sweetheart!

PS - In our house, we always called Lima Beans "slimy beans"! ;)

You are a master painter, Brian.

Aren't you nice to play along....

I'm so glad you played along. This was fun. Your last line had me laughing out loud. It wasn't hard to get through this delightful list.

PS I don't usually play along either. It's a tough gig.

You're brilliant and sweet...what more do you need, well still I will wish upon you and your family a huge amount of money ll

How wonderful for you! I had no idea about the painting...perhaps if you do some, you'll show them here?

Good for you for teaching your boys to wear underpants...I know a grown man who doesn't wear them and trust me when I tell you that plumbers crack is not a fashion statement!

As for food, I learned to bury anything I could not stand under a layer of mashed potato...

Enjoy your weekend!

Appropriate award! Congratulations!

I don't like being restricted either!

Never tasted Lima beans, and I can touch my nose with my tongue :) , even though I had to make the mountain come to Moses ! ( bend your nose a little with your finger tip!)

Nice one. Oh, and yes, I did read all the way until the end. Have a wonderful day my friend.

I could've read on and on and on..thanks for sharing a bit about your life - and congrats on the award (you didn't accept mine by the way..but no worries - I'm ok with it and not sure about the award thing myself)
Wonder how you manage to do your posting and commenting without reliable internet...and I appreciate both a lot - your wonderful writing and your sensitive comments
Have a great weekend Brian!

And it's such a pretty award, too!

I've dabbled in pottery and oil painting...would so love to try acrylics and watercolor but have no free time right now to proceed. Maybe when the kids go back to school (1st time in 5 years I won't be homeschooling!) Hey...maybe you should illustrate some of your stories? Just a thought.

Oh, and I love lima beans...just can't get the family to eat them!

Hi Brian,

I am doing okay, thanks for asking. Losing someone always reminds you about how we need to live each day to the fullest and that means eating lima beans which I for some reason kinda like. I like them mixed with corn which is called succotash and if they are baby lima beans then it is even better. I think they are healthy for us.

But you did have me LOL about the commando thing. You know them balls do need some support otherwise they will end up hanging down to your knees, and trust me that is not a pretty site to see them things flapping around when a man is in a Speedo. Ha, got you there didn't I.

Congrats on a well deserved award.

God bless.

A well deserved award.

I think painting and writing are two sides of the same coins -- both teach you to observe all the details.

Loved how you ended this, lol. Talented and funny.

Either you have a very long tongue or a very long nose. I admit to being most impressed by this!

TechnoBabe said...

Glad you got the award and that the givers are great encouragers of yours. The tongue thing takes a special kind of talent. My older daughter could always do that and at family gatherings we would ask her to do it. We would each share our wonderful talents with the family at family get togethers. I would be interested in seeing any of your watercolors if you still have any. Congrats on the award and I am so glad you find a place to use the internet because your posts are so good I would have withdrawals if I didn't have them to read.

Tony Single said...

Well, I found that interesting, Brian! As a fellow artist, would love to see some of those watercolours of yours! You must have been quite something to win awards for it! :)

Brian Miller said...

mrsu...you crack me up. you did get me...lol. glad you are doing well through this period...think of you often in our prayers...

techno...you always make me smile...

claudia...sorry...i really do suck at accepting these things...i would lie if i said it does not feel good to be recognized...know i accepted it in my heart..

i dont think there is anything you could do to limas to get it passed my tongue...i dont know what it is because i eat some pretty nasty stuff at times (just for the thrill)...

Congratulations... you have a grea blog. I don't eat green beans but love lima beans (I was forced fed green beans as a kid!)

You had me at commando.

No wonder you don't want to wear chaps. You weren't KIDDING! Ha!

You paint, too? Geez! All that talent in one package? And, as the line from "FARGO", "and he's good looking, too!"

Congrat's on the award!

you're so good at playing along! it was a lot of fun to read but it made me wonder where it is that you would move back to? YOU have always my favorite, even if you don't like lima beans...i'm mature enough to overlook something like that ;)

christine said...

Omgosh I have just laughed my way through this entry of yours and laughed even more about the 'going commando' As a mother of three boys I always insisted they had clean pants every day and they wouldn't have dared suggested they went without, now grown up I wouldn't dare ask them!LOL
Congrats on the Award...
Well deserved.

Congrats, so well deserved. Fun to learn some more bits and pieces about you. Your the first person I've found who even saw Once. I love that soundtrack! She has an amazing voice. I will also try anything once, but not lima beans or cottage cheese. Textural issues. And an unfortunate childhood incident when I was forced to do so...

tony said...

Ah! But........could you touch the tip of your nose with your tongue if it had a lima bean on the end of it?

secret agent woman said...

I'll try any (non-meat) food. But I will never like cilantro.

Marla said...

Congrats Brian!! Love this post and all the interesting info about you. I will do my best to stop picturing you wearing underwear while painting pictures of lima beans. :-)

Ranch dressing makes everything taste better. It's a proven fact. Is the passing of the award supposed to be compensation for the commando visualization you provided us all? *smiles*

Congrats Brian.

Brian--I am fascinated with what you say here. That you couldn't sell your house and had to move back. We had our house on the market for over a year and had really decided to move on in our minds. It took great effort to move back home and not feel depressed about it, even though our house is nice, the location is great, etc. It just didn't seem to have the things that we want at this stage in our lives. But, like you, the bills are paid. We are not in foreclosure like so many other unfortunate people. At that you paint! I went back to school late in life and got my BA degree in painting. I love it although haven't done much of it lately. This blog seems more like a work of art sometimes that actually sitting down and putting brush to paper. In a way, it is all art, isn't it? I don't think that you could write poetry as well as you do without being creative. There are so many ways to be creative. Sometimes they overlap, sometimes not. But, it is ALL art in my opinion. Commando...hmmmmm....You would enjoy living where we do. I used to pick strawberries from my garden in my birthday suit. I might have shocked a few planes in the sky though!

Bernie said...

I loved learning new things about you well I really didn't need to know the commando bit but hey that's the way you roll....LOL
I think you are a fantastic writer and I am sure your paintings are just as wonderful.
You sound like a great family man and I am proud to have you as a blogging friend.....:-) Hugs

A slight reveal. Nicely done.

my only wish is that you kept on revealing more of 'you'...

"Once" is one of my favorite movies and soundtracks. Lima beans make me gag.

You should win awards every day. :)
