Mr. Wilson's pet

Mr. Wilson lived alone in the two story wood house on the corner. He was fastidious about his lawn and would spend most days with his bushes, muttering under his breath. If you were just fast enough, you could pedal your bike around the corner and be gone before you got too cold from the shadow of that old place.

Then one day, a calico cat showed up and decided to live with him. Not that it was his choice, the cat just kinda chose him. Mr. Wilson would walk along the porch that stretched across the front and down the sides of the house, boards creaking, his cane tapping the spindles of the railing, calling that cat all kinds of words my mom would have found worthy of ivory soap. It would just sit under the end of his old Monte Carlo, blinking its eyes at him.

The cat must have lived on mice, because there was no way he fed it, he didn't even give candy at Halloween. Early on we trained our cat to stay away from Mr. Wilson's place, but no matter how bad he treated it that old calico stuck around, lounging on his porch swing when he was not looking.

One summer night, that calico disappeared. All us kids figured he finally caught up with it and our imaginations ran wild with what we thought he did. Three days later, an awful racket erupted, that drew us out into the yard. Everyone on the block was milling in the streets, watching the smoke rise from an orange glow on the corner.

Mr. Wilson stood in the center of his yard, watching his house collapse in on itself as the fire ate it cinders. It was not the fire that drew our attention though, it was all the cats in the neighborhood, lined up on the fence, screeching and mewing, staring at Mr. Wilson. As the second floor gave way into the first, they hopped down in a line and paraded passed Mr. Wilson.

He stood there shaking in his pajamas, as dad herded us back in for dinner. We never saw Mr. Wilson again after that night.

This is a Theme Thursday post.

OK that is a little creepy Brian! Do you think the cats took their revenge for their lost friend Calico?
Is this fiction or factual?

mama-face said...

haha. This makes me laugh and I hope that's okay...a couple of years ago a legit crazy cat lady's house burned down a few miles away from here...there were over 100 cats inside. Some of them made it outside. ew.

We also joke that our cat will "go for our throats" in the middle of the night...after that story, I don't doubt it's possible.

slommler said...

Ha! Shaking in his PJ's huh? And the cats probably had a smug look on their faces and they paraded by him. I am sure somehow, they started that fire too!

I almost feel bad for the mean old man...I just can't help the soft spot I have for old people, even the cranky ones.

I took it completely different as I read. I thought the cats had lined his fenced & meowed to wake him...to save him from the fire. You never said he actually harmed the cat.

Aaaaawww, I was kinda hoping that having the cat changed the old geezer for GOOD Brian!! Bummer!

TALON said...

What an interesting story. Did he hurt the cat? Or did the cat somehow save him from a fiery death? And I loved,"...before you got too cold from the shadow of that old place" and the ivory soap worthy words. You painted a great portrait of a recluse, Brian.

Kathy's Klothesline said...

So, Calico had friends. Do you think Calico set the fire and what could have become of the poor old man shaking in his pj's? Did he trade them in for a straight jacket? If I dream about this, I will hold you entirely responsible!

Everything seems fine now,
I am glad that the problem is resolved. Happy Wednesday Evening!

Wow, what an image! Arsonist cats (i presume the calico was safe) and a "gotcha" parade. It is true that cats will home in on the one person in the room that doesn't care for them. Uncanny. Just like your brilliant tale. Thank you.

I thought the calico was going to save him from the fire.

A little bit creepy and really funny. Good job, Brian. Cats are scary though!:)

Your last sentence is missing an important word. My mind ran wild with this one. First I thought that he was secretly kind to a whole bunch of cats and they all came out of the house after the fire. Then I understood that it was an act of revenge for hurting one of their own. (Insert evil laugh here.)

Mama Wheaton said...

Not sure who to feel sorry for. Proud of the cats, but sorry for anyone who would grow old and be like the old man.

This is a haunting, haunting tale...very poignant and, as with all your work, excellently written - I was gripped throughout. You continue to amaze, Brian, your characterisation of Mr. Wilson was really quite brilliant.

Oooh - Hitchcockian!

Whether or not true, this story reminds me of the inate instict of cats to favour the people that dislike them the most. I had a friend who didn't care for cats, but whenever he visited, mine would immediately park themselves in his lap, but only when I was in the room. It drove him nuts, but made me laugh.

Loved the post! It was a perfect ending.

Several unanswered questions here. How dare you make your readers think like that? ;-)

Syd said...

I was hoping that he would take the old calico in and it would become his companion, softening his heart. You can tell that I am a hopeless optimist!

Gladys said...

I had a neighbor who collected cats. He would literally take your cat from your yard and rename it and even though you knew it was your cat he would swear it was someone elses. Maybe he fed all those cats and they all came to make sure he was okay...or mabye...they well...nope too creepy. :)
