hookie

we played hookie today, the four of us,
slipping through the cracks unannounced,
hitching a ride on a steel star,
just to see the view,
walking aisles with poets & storytellers,
eating the best $4.95 sub
you'll ever find,
with grandaddy and gramma.

we even took the secret stash
of chocolate covered peanuts
out of grandaddy's desk,
sucking them clean
before crunching them
as we walked downtown
to the tune of sidewalk minstrels.

school will wait.
work will wait.
we will not,
until the sun goes down
smiles creasing our faces
as we sink
our heads into the pillow.

because some days
you just need
to play hookie.

This poem has me wanting to play hookie. Bad. I think 4 kids wouldn't mind, either.

This totally reminded me of skipping school once with my brother. Man, did he get in trouble because he's older than me, so he got the brunt of the punishment. But man, was that a fun day!

I love letting the chocolate melt before I crunch on the peanuts. Life requires that you play hookie sometimes.

So true! I play hookie too, very often, thinking the same. Life is *now* and sometimes *now* needs to be lived.;) Not worked or schooled.

Some days are just meant for hookie & I sometimes refer to them as Therapy Days or Sanity Breaks ... compulsory for a healthy body, mind & soul, I reckon!
Sounds like a wonderfully perfect day Brian!

Hookie is food for the spirit. It's important to partake now and then. I had a coworker back in the day who shared this belief. Once a year for the ten years we worked together, we played hookie. We went somewhere and rode a roller coaster. A couple of times I took Lisa out of school and she went too. Great fun.

(BTW, I know that star. Do you live nearby?)
