we played hookie today, the four of us,
slipping through the cracks unannounced,
hitching a ride on a steel star,
just to see the view,
walking aisles with poets & storytellers,
eating the best $4.95 sub
you'll ever find,
with grandaddy and gramma.
we even took the secret stash
of chocolate covered peanuts
out of grandaddy's desk,
sucking them clean
before crunching them
as we walked downtown
to the tune of sidewalk minstrels.
school will wait.
work will wait.
we will not,
until the sun goes down
smiles creasing our faces
as we sink
our heads into the pillow.
because some days
you just need
to play hookie.

NICE!!
This poem has me wanting to play hookie. Bad. I think 4 kids wouldn't mind, either.
This poem so charmingly describes what sounds like a wonderful day, this made me smile :)
the days are getting longer-- i think i agree.
You had me at "hookie"! And I want some of those chocolate covered peanuts! YUM!
That was lovely - I am jealous. No hooky for me in the immediate future...

Teach me your ways oh master!
makes me think of days gone by ;) love it
Especially with grandparents!!!
This totally reminded me of skipping school once with my brother. Man, did he get in trouble because he's older than me, so he got the brunt of the punishment. But man, was that a fun day!
I am playing hookie from blog school! lol
Sounds wonderful!
some days you just have to Brian, wonderful again. a huge fan
Boy, isn't that the truth! And some days you just need chocolate covered peanuts! Have a super weekend!
Delightful! I did that many times with all of my children - and they still remember it as a special occasion - a hookie occasion.
What a splendid idea! Glad it was so much fun!
Your post generates Smiles!
Kids are gone now...but ya know, playing "hookie" did not have to go with them, did it?
Thanks!
fabulous.
we do this, and they are just the best sometimes.
I love letting the chocolate melt before I crunch on the peanuts. Life requires that you play hookie sometimes.
Great!
Frolic Four,
Family Fun,
Well Done!
Happy Friday Evening!
nice still can't picture you as a rebellious child
I wouldn't think of you as the hookie playing kind!
What fun!! And we all need to break away from the pack every now and again. Have a great weekend!
I'm glad to hear that you're going to make it to a baseball game!! :)
Yes, time to spend with each other is important. There is no time like the present.
Agreed! Wonderful, Brian. Sounds like a delightful day!
amen amen AMEN.
what a great family you have :)
Sounds like a fun day to me. We all should play hookie once in a while.......:-) Hugs
We haven't done that in years! This post made me want to do it again. I'm not sure if thats a good or bad influence.
Thanx Brian.
Oh yeah! Always seems better in the spring. Pass the peanuts, please.
We all need to play hookie once in a while. It's good for the soul.
I remember the days..... really enjoyed this, Brian.
Love it! I did hookie yesterday from work! Amen. Great write! Blessings.
Wow. This sounds wonderful. Nice poem, Brian.
Have a good day...:)
i feel like this made me want to call in sick next week...and play a little hookie with hubby and the kids..
That $4.95 sub brought back a sweet memory for me...eating mine as I walked along with my best friend while we played hookie! Great memory and wonderful poem Brian
Hugs

So true! I play hookie too, very often, thinking the same. Life is *now* and sometimes *now* needs to be lived.;) Not worked or schooled.
Have a lovely weekend dear Brian,
xo
Lovely, I felt as if I was playing hooky as well. Love the 55 poem too. Unfortunately, couldn't read the dream -- can't do kids dying--but thanks for the warning!
you filled up my heart with nostalgia :)
what a lovely piece of poetry.
Being in outside sales, I played a lot of hookie! Damn cell phones and computers ruined it!
Oh I love this so much, how wonderful, how lovely 'sidewalk minstrals' inspiring...
Beautiful. And...you reminded me I have one of those big giant chocolate bars stashed in my cupboard, lol.
Playing hookie with the grandparents ... special day ... your writing today reminds me of being in Mayberry!!! I want to play hookie too!
I am playing hookie all summer. Wanna come play??
♥namaste♥
So true. Hookie is good.
I do not know what a hookie is but I can see that you had a great day. Have fun, friend!
Days like that are so precious. I think I need to take one again soon!
If time is money, that was a day well spent!
Amen!
yes you do! I like that all else will wait but you won't - wise decision
Yeah, I think it's time for me to play hookie too. nicely done :)
My kids love playing hookie but I always feel quilty, so sad.
I adore days I just play "hookie" and do whatever comes into my mind one moment at a time.

You got your head screwed on right Brian.
Can I come play hookey with you? Sounds a treat!
Sandi
Smart of you to know that some days are meant to be like that.
Nice. I'd love to tag along on a day like that!
I once had a day out like that with my grandfather, no chocolate covered nuts, but we did get chocolate frosted donuts and milk...
Lovely poem and smiles to you, too.
I definitely need to play hookie for a day or two!
I played jumping ropes and juggling rocks when I was young, What is Hookie anyway? Could you explain?
I am not getting it!
Sorry for my ignorance!
I am foreign for American games.
Those are the absolute best days, aren't they? I gave those moments to my own kids and they treasure them. :)
PS. Addicted much? You are everywhere on every blog known to man. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours you're spending commenting. ;)
Some days are just meant for hookie & I sometimes refer to them as Therapy Days or Sanity Breaks ... compulsory for a healthy body, mind & soul, I reckon!
Sounds like a wonderfully perfect day Brian!
My youngest would def. agree with you. The oldest refuses to miss school. Yes, he is a freak. :)
I Google and get it...
AMEN!!!!!!

Yes, sometimes you do!
Yep, playing hookie is a good thing sometimes.
Cheers,

"to the tune of sidewalk minstrels."
ahh what a floating line in a poem that floats so high and does so much good.
Thank you!
xo
Hookie is food for the spirit. It's important to partake now and then. I had a coworker back in the day who shared this belief. Once a year for the ten years we worked together, we played hookie. We went somewhere and rode a roller coaster. A couple of times I took Lisa out of school and she went too. Great fun.
(BTW, I know that star. Do you live nearby?)
My so keeps trying to tell me this, but I beg to differ.
Amen to that!!!!
Playing hooky from time to time is refreshing and just makes for GOOD MEMORIES!
Playing hookie sounds so much fun,
I will do it when I have a chance!
SO TRUE! I have many fond memories of taking my children out to lunch or shopping on a school day. How long are they just ours, really?
what does that mean "playing hookie"?
I have such a hard time doing that and never did in school but good for you lot!! :)
I miss being able to skip school. I never have skipped work, but having all that free time is such a gift! It's like winning the lottery or something :)
