55 - postcards from the edge

squinting into the sun
watching planes come in,
he flaps a postcard
against his leg.

how long has it been,
thought he'd never
see her again,
he's waited forever,
on today.

a postcard flutters
to the ground
as they embrace,
figure he doesn't
need it anyway,
when i hear her say,
oh dad, you came...

Tell a story in 55 words. Give it a try or just read more, go see g-man.

Have a great weekend everybody. It's never too late to go home.

Interesting. I wonder how many thought, as I did, that he was waiting to see a long-lost lover... instead of someone else he loved, in another way.

Very thought provoking 55, Brian. I have missed your posts a lot lately.

For some of us, home is someplace you never want to go back to.....

Brian, you've actually inspired me to try another "55" tomorrow. (posting around 8 a.m.), but typically for me, it won't be anywhere near as positively emotional as yours! Thanks.

You pack so much into a little 55. This small story speaks of the beginning of healing and reconciliation. One of the best things about your writing is that you don't use extra add-in words. You speak clearly. Your writing is for everyone. Every.One.!!

This reminded me of a sememster in college when "I went home again". I was suffering from depression, not eating, had just ended a two and a half year relationship and I was totally burned out. My parents let me leave mid semester and come home, to sleep, to cry and to heal. It was the greatest gift they could have given me. I did go back to college and finish my degree when I was 30 and my dad and mom were so proud. You captured that today with your poem. The graciousness that is extended when you let somebody come home. May we always be reminded of this as parents. Have an awesome weekend.

yes it's a true story I really hated to do what I did but then again he's been getting gas from me for quite some time now. I finally decided the only way to stop this is to step into a lower place than I like to be. So I bought five dollars of gas and then filled the rest of the can with water and placed it back in the truck with the rest of my equipment as I always did. The neighbor figured out that I filled my tanks for my gardening tools every Sunday night. He'd hit me early Monday Or Tuesday morning. I waited up at night just to see if I'd catch this guy and I finally did he thought he was slick doing what he was doing so I had to show him who was smarter than the average bear and it's going to cost him money just to clean out the gasline and the gas tank as you all know gas and water don't mix I really don't think he'll ever do it again if he does he's more of an idiot than I thought.
