the black bell stands,
resolute in its watch,
behind the house,
atop the hill,
casting shadows,
pull rope twisting
in the breeze.
silent,
we pause,
in the crinkly grass,
beside it, watching
the golden sun
recede slowly,
across the valley
into night.
silent,
he listens
for the sweet toll,
to call him home,
across the fields,
to dinner
one last time.
silent,
i yearn
to pull the
weathered cotton cord
to ease his mind.

My friend had her last chemo today and will have her last radiation treatment on Friday at Mayo's...where they have a big brass bell to ring after your last radiation treatment, too....!!!

This is great Brian, and seems to fall right in line with ringing our bells for Barry, congratulations on a well deserved award......:-) Hugs
A beautiful piece and much health and happiness to Barry!!!
Very nice. As you've probably noticed, I tend to prefer free-form poetry, but there's a subtly chaotic rhythm to this that rings true (no pun intended).
Fill the silence Brian. The bell will ring tomorrow at 2.
Great writing. Love the dinner bell. Brings people together.
Sometimes, waiting can seem an eternity.
Yeah, for Barry!

Ummm.. I need a remedial course. Why is it his last time?
even tho I don't understand it, it's still beautiful, but I think I should be getting more out of it.
And no, I've only had 1 glass of wine...
I lived this one too. Chemo sucks and it's so good to get through it with another chance to move forward.
Amen!

Beautiful poem, Brian...Congrats on the award! :)
wishes,
devika
Beautiful.
Wonderful. And praying for Barry.
Hi Brian:)
Three beautiful portraits you have breathtakingly painted.First the bell atop the hill, golden sun receeding across the valley, and the lonely man waiting for the bell to toll to go home.
I agree it would be a good idea to pull the rope and send the man home to his waiting family and hot food, rest and relaxation which he deserves. Life is very simple and uncomplicated for this man toiling in the fields. He doesn't go by the clock but the sound of the bell. A charming world of the past and I wonder whether such worlds exist to day.
I am thrilled to read about Barry's success and I pray for his good health.
Have a wonderful day Brian:)
Joseph

beautiful! wonderful poetic ringing for barry!
Beautiful poem, but really congrats to Barry! I don't know him, but love hearing good news like this for anyone.
We await the sound of the bell for some relief...Marking an end...Then we prepare for the next big hill to climb...
Beautiful piece. It could be written for my bell, as well. (oops, that rhymes...hehee)
I feel the urgent need to OWN a dinner bell...so wanting my kiddos to have sweet memories of such things. Dinner bells do not have to be a thing of the past.
Great award Brian.
***RING***
That's a hopeful ring for Barry. I'll add a prayer to the general well-wishes.
A perfect poem! Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful Brian, Praise the Lord for Barry. Ring That Bell Loud and Clear AWESOME
Beautiful; a silent bell.
We will ring, ring ring that bell.
Great poetry.
This is lovely and soothing.
That was wonderful. Nice poem. You deserved the award. Congrats!
Have a nice day!:)
Brian, that is awesome to hear about your friend completeing chemothrapy.
I was happy to get to Barry's site in time today. How inspiring to read of his fight against cancer.
Thank you, Brian!
You have a way with words, good one!
bambi and a few others caught the line on it being his last time...the poem was originally inspired on spending time with a relative as they grow older...the sun fading across the landscape and pulling the bell being the desire to see them go gracefully.
barry on the other hand, we want to see around for a long time to come!
The last verse is so filled with emotion! I love it!
Well done on the award, Brian! I've linked up with Jingle, but haven't had the opportunity to follow through.
Kat
Ahh some celebrations just need to have bells to be pulled. How could Easter be Easter without all the bell towers ringing in the morning to celebrate? How can a wedding be festive without bells?
how can a funeral be solemn & gratefull without the deep voices of the bigger bells? How can we enjoy the summer sun on a medieval square without the belfry tower's singing?
I love bells
Ring ring for Barry!!
It's almost haunting. Congrats to Barry! :)
I enjoyed this very much!
Ringing for Barry today : )
excited to hear the bell ring,
wow,

Hi Brian,
That was a great poem and it was very visual in the mind.
I will be ringing my bell for Barry today too. I wonder what the world will think when they hear so many bells ringing today.
God bless.
This was stunning and very touching. Your imagery was superb.
Very nice as usual Brian . . 2pm Thursday is 6am Friday morning here . . .about 3 minutes to go as I write!
Well that would be right about now (6am Friday morning if Blogger allows me to comment!)
clang a rang! clang a rang! (it's 2 pm)
Brian, I'll have to do this again and record it! My improv bell is amazing! To Barry :)
I spent yesterday afternoon with my best friend, who has cancer..I heard a different bell than you.
Just pull it!
leave taking is sad, yet there is something inevitable in it too, you have brought that out well.
A poet here has termed it as:
“Making unseen
Those we go on seeing”
Good poem!
Great poem. Congrats to Barry. Ring it proud.
Best wishes for Barry. Cancer sucks! Been there with my mom and best friend.
Beautiful poem. Reminds me of being in a field, gathering the cows to take them home. Something I have never done.
I saw that picture in my mind and I thought about Barry today.
Wow! I popped over via Daily Moe and simply loved that poem. I clicked to make a comment & 100 comments already! I am 101...
Bells. Bells. Bells. The first bell I fell in love with was that at Altgeld Hall at the University of Illinois, Urbana. I've written many-a-poem 'bout bells - yours rings very true.
Beautiful.
(hugs) nice poem. very nice.
The bells rang in Alabama at 2!
My dinner bell was my mother yelling out the back door at the top of her lungs! LOL!
Congrats on your award. You definitely deserve it!
Smiles!
Thank you Brian. I am completely overwhelmed by the support I've been receiving.
And humbled.
I nominated you for a Sunshine Award!

Love the use of silent in a poem written about a bell. Great imagery.
This brings back nice memories of my grandmother ringing the bell to call us all in for dinner.
This sent shivers up my spine and I could hear the silence. Fingers crossed for all good things for your friend.
