Theme Thursday: Bread

raking stray sticks
through remnants of warmth shared
in the shadows of night,
orange embers emerge
beneath blankets of grey ash,
which rise in plumes
thickening the cool morning air.

tired fingers work
flour and water into pasty orbs,
small worlds pressed flat
now tucked neatly onto
beds of white hot ash
transforming it fragrantly
into our scant repast.

plunking charcoal chunks
from nooks they create
in the bottom of our biscuit,
we eat, dreaming of sticky
golden honey dripping
down our chins, fooling
our tongues into submission.

sometimes this is what it takes
to swallow our daily bread.

yet we are thankful.

For more takes on the theme of bread, go here.

mmmm now my mouth is watering. great take on it. Were you camping? Or going back to the "olden days" when they made it like that?

TechnoBabe said...

Unfortunately, lots of folks eat them like that these days.

Great take on a theme which is harder than it looks. Hope mine isn't stale!

Brian Miller said...

it was at the end of a camping trip...but like techno said...too many eat that way. the essense of this one fo me is being thankful for what you do have. we dont all get to pick our lot in life, and while we may dream of honey, we may be eating ash cakes. we keep dreaming, yet remain thankful.

biscuits in the fire...never tried that. We always go the pork and beans route. Who came up with bread? This was a tough subject, indeed.

Ronda Laveen said...

Well told. I could smell them baking, feel the warmth in my mouth, the heaviness in my belly and thankfulness in my heart.

Nothing like cooking over a fire, provided that I follow it with a trip back to a hotel and not a tent. :)

Somehow this has me thinking about the Haitian mud cookies used to ward off starvation. So sad.

at least you didn't scrap the entire mood and go to McD's.

some of my fondest memories are of meals eaten beside a campfire, with ingredients that i would never use at home. ever hear of a doughboy? only at a scout campfire!

Cabo said...

Ooooh, that was a low blow. That's it. That picture I have of you, you know the one, it's going viral buddy. Viral.

Oh, that so reminds me of the stories of the Haiti people that made mudcakes to feed their children so they wouldn't cry from the pain of hunger...so tragic!

why does food cooked on an open fire while camping always seem to taste better...especially if you are camping when its brisk and chilly?

Mmmmmmmm biscuits.

Some days my daily bread is hard to swallow and sometimes I have to spit them out but nonetheless I am always thankful. For some reason this makes me think of the shit sandwiches I talk about...:)...shit sandwich with honey on top. Food for thought. :)

Hi Brian:)

It is amazing to see how you develop a lovely story out of a simple thing such as bread. We are all lucky to get not only our bread but butter and jam and ice cream too.

It is true that people who get very little thank God for what ever little they get.

But this post also brings out very poignantly about people who don't get one square meal a day and people who die of starvation and hunger.

For these poor people every single penny counts where as most of us don't think of our pennies because they have hardly any value.

Many thanks for this wonderful post which reminds us of God's abundant blessings to us.We are indeeed privileged.

Have a lovely day Brian:)

Love the imagery, reminds me of damper bread cooking in aluminium foil packets at camp fires.

The three loafs you have are worth more than any "thing" in life. And their having you gives them all the honey that they need in their life.

Your words "feed" one's soul.

God bless.
