by the snowballs

blue gloves,
with grey and white stripes,
shape
perfect projectiles of
frozen white crystal.
zip!
zam!
pow!
smug smiles
melt
into wailing screams,
as a shovel
full of snow
slips
passed his knit scarf
burning
its way underneath
his warm layers.
mom!
throwing snow is
so much fun
until you take
a hit yourself;
gossip.

There have been a few shovel fulls of snow thrown between mt and The Lad today. Have a wonderful Christmas - my very best wishes to both you and your family.

Meeko Fabulous said...

How fun! I've never gotten a chance to play in the snow. Well, I've been once, there's a picture as proof, but I don't remember it.

willow said...

Wow, that was a zinger ending! (so true, btw!)

Reminds me of my brother and his friends tormenting my sisters and I with hard-as-a-rock snowballs. Us girls did things that required no pain, like making snow angel's.
It's nice to read writing that sparks a good/bad memory. :) :( Have a happy holiday!

Now it feels like I have snow melting down the inside of my jacket. Probably because we were out doing the same thing until about 20 mins ago.
Good stuff!

Nothing worse than getting snow inside your clothes! The first time that I ever went skiing, I wore blue jeans. Bad idea!

snow forts and snowball fights...those were the days. Me and Toby built a snowman on Saturday...it had yellow spots.

happy Solstice, Brian. i remember when i was at university, all the classes were canceled due to a blizzard coming down and i'd offered to give a few friends a ride home with me and my boyfriend. and we started a snowball fight as we got close to the car and i unwittingly threw a snowball with the car keys. it took us about 40 minutes to find them in the snow. i was. such a dork, really. always doing stuff like that. lucille ball reincarnate. happy hollydays!

Happy Holidays and enjoy the snow! We had quite a bit of snow fun up here in Philly all weekend. I hope it lasts for a while.

Beth said...

Jealous. I've never been in a snowball fight. It doesn't snow where I live.

Now, mud fights are a different story.

secret agent woman said...

This is precisely why I hate snowball fights.

Nothing like a good snow washing! :) I have had plenty of them with growing up with brothers and hanging out with boys. :) I have always been pretty good at paying back though! :)

I heard that, and it made me smile, because I remember doing that too. That certain Mom call that all kids have. So precious.
Happy holidays to you and yours.

Wow, for us, we have no snow. So the kids and I wrote our own Aussie Jingle Bells. Pertaining to the sea, surf, BBQ's and hot Sun :)

I remember this, the joy of snow when we were children. We could play in it for hours. Now I would freeze in an instant.;) But throwing snowballs can be fun even now.
Enjoy it!

Where you in my memories? That is so how I remember it being when my sister and I would rush out for the annual (daily) snowball fight. Build the forts, through the snowballs, then it became shovel fulls of snow. And if I remember correctly ended in me yelling "MOOOOOM!!!" Next came a break for hot chocolate to warm up, clothes in the dryer and then back at it again for an instant replay. Thanks for triggering that memory!

That was a great blog. Very creative! Excellent job my friend.

Mighty M said...

Yeah, I have no desire to have my face slammed by snow of any kind. OUCH. But the joy on the kids faces, just wonderful!

Raven said...

A delightful poem and so very true! It's easier to dish it out than it is to take it. I love the use of the words, 'zip,' 'zam,' and 'pow;' so powerful and they really added to the poem. I also liked how you ended the poem with gossip. Just thrown in there like a snowball. Very well done.

Great writing. Hope you have a very Happy Christmas.

These things make me angry. I hate being hit with snow, paintballs and airsoft pellets, but the appeal of inflicting that same kind of torture on a friend continues to draw me into it! Great post!

My kids love to throw snowballs but start screaming and crying when they get hit. Good thing they have my husband for a target.

Oh, this brought back some beautiful memories to me!
