jello
thrown
against the wall,
the wet sound of a crumpling body,
lost to the thunder,
cattle stampeding
through aisles,
chaotically
intent
on
victory,
whatever the cost.
A cool smirk paints her
assailant's face
as she steals
the last
toy
at
sunrise,
black friday morning.
how else will she
purchase
her kids
love
on
Christmas?

Great 55 Brian ~ perfect for the havoc that wrecks on Black Friday. I love the way it lays out on the page too ~ very creative.
Sounds like you had a very thankful Thanksgiving with you family. That's terrific. May every day be thankful.
Mine 55 is up:
Friday Flash 55 ~ Memoirs
Brian, I could say so MUCH on this topic that I could lay miles down on your comment page -- every year on this day I'm left thinking, my God what's wrong with us??
And bang, you got it all in just 55 words. Powerful stuff! And such a story.
I've heard about Black Friday but thankfully, never experienced it! Hard to imagine that any sale could be worth all this!
Thats the very reason that I've never shopped on that day!
Excellent 55 Brian!
Thanks for taking the time to post a Holiday story.
Have a Kick Ass Week-End...
awesome 55! that's exactly why I stay away from black friday!
I'm a sucker losing out on sleep just to spend time with my mother. I hope she appreciates it!
And I hope your wife finds tons of deals!
Wow. I keep hearing about this Black Friday, but never from anyone firsthand. Sounds brutal! But so well expressed.
Your story (poem?) reminds me how much I hate shopping. :)
You have an awesome way with images. This is a scary 55, very clever. Mine's going up at midnight.
Hmm... I had a much longer rant on this topic last year after the Black Friday stampede that crushed that Wal Mart employee to death in Long Island last year. Yours is much more poetic.
Oh, this soooooo sums it up! I was talking with my neighbor the other day and she said almost the identical thing - it's buying love because maybe you don't give them enough the rest of the year. Needless to say, neither she nor I will be out early tomorrow. Or if so, it will be for a lovely morning walk. ;-)
Great 55, and I hope you had a lovely day!
I'm not a big fan of Black Friday and how it makes people so crazy.
I'm out of laundry detergent and that's the ONLY reason I'll be stepping out tomorrow afternoon. I'm even willing to pay a couple of extra dollars for it at my grocery store because there is NO WAY I'm stepping foot in a big box store tomorrow! Hope your thanksgiving was wonderful.
Smiles!!
trust me. i have never willingly participated in black friday...though i worked in retail at one point and had to live through a couple. yikes. brings out the worst in some...
great day today!
Crazy isn't it? A group of holidays to celebrate love and sharing and we kill each other for a playstation!!!
Great Post!!
I cannot take what people will do on Black Friday. I've NEVER participated in it and NEVER will. Love this 55. Mines up. you might appreciate it. jeNN
Just the reason to stay home....not the reason for the season!
A good 55! Sears even opens at 0400AM tomorrow. YIKES!!!
Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!
I won't be a part of the crowd. Although I may check out some deals online from the comfort of my kitchen.
This is why I NEVER do Black Friday. That and every time I've tried it I ended up spending MORE than I would have otherwise.
Well done.
There must be tons of parents out there who know exactly what this is like.
I lucked out-- I just have cats. They're happy if I keep their dishes full, pet them, and scoop their poop.
This is why I get to stay home on Black Friday. :)
Great 55.
My own Friday 55 is right HERE.
Come see!
I am so happy Canada doesn't have Black Friday. I survived working retail on boxing day, that was enough.
great 55!
Brian nice 55. Mine will post after midnight west coast time. We both went the same direction. In this case, I modestly say "Great Minds....."
yikes, black friday sounds like a day to stay at home. We don't have it in Europe (neither do we have boxing day)
Awesome! I avoid the stores on Black Friday as much as possible. Will be back to read more in your blog. Love the 55!!!
As always, superb.;) A great depiction of the shopping mania, which I am about to join in about an hour.
Have a great (Black) Friday.
;)
something tells me you guys don't like black friday... glad i'm missing it, heee heee heeeee
A good example of less being more. Nice work Brian.
Great poem. I wish I could write without having to rhyme, but thats how my brain works. cxx
This is incredible, the way you just weave words around to create a story, an accurate one, it's awesome ;)
I stay HOME!!! No sense in all the nonsense of Black Friday....but those few words "buying love" haunts me.
Great job ---excellent work.
Thanks for the great comment you left for me today.
I don't really do the Black Friday thing anymore. I used to with my Mom but now we stay home and decorate instead. Much more enjoyable than jello on the wall and bodies crumpling under our feet. I was never very good at it anyway.
Great 55, Brian.
Wonderfully said Brian. I can hardly wait for the chaos stories which inevitably come later in the day.
Today is the 20th annual BUY NOTHING DAY which I will participate in except for a trip to a local non chain coffee shop to hang out with a tall blond friend.
Great statement.
Black Friday is sheer lunacy--unless it's fun! I can't decide. Anyway, I am not sure I've ever really experienced it "in the flesh."
I mostly worry about people in our dire economy overspending in a panic and then having a rough time after the holidays.
Ooooooo - well said! We don't have black Friday in Canada - thank goodness. If we did, I would certainly not participate - sounds tacky and downright dangerous!!
Wow, that was visceral! Well done!!!
Sadly all too true.
Wow! That was just great. You caught the real spirit of black Friday.
Tis the season to spend spend spend. Those what got it will spend it--i jst waited outside of
bst buy in the freezing cold for 40 minutes to get a printer, etc etc with my wife...there were people waiting since the night before...wow, crazy
but amzingly everyone from customers to employees were all very cordial and patient...if you know what to expect it's not a big
deal. Have a happy!
You captured the insanity well.
Thanks for coming to visit, which in turn led me here. Sounds like you had a great Thanksgiving, mostly because you have the right mindset for it. I read somewhere yesterday (the newspaper? Good Housekeeping?) that people who frequently feel gratitude are healthier than people who don't. Not to mention much pleasanter to be around!
(That was 55, though not as lyric as yours, sigh.)
Perfect for Black Friday!
Crap. Jello thrown against the wall. I was thinking brains from a shotgun blast, but I was wrong.
Am I really as stupid as I feel?
I return after months of abstinence, and my thirst–upon reading your 55 images of havoc–is immediately quenched. It's good to be back.
Ciao my friend
I don't know that, never experienced it but I think it's crazy;this world is really unbalanced. But what I know is that you wrote it beautifully! As usual!Have a nice weekend!:)
I knew by the end of the first sentence toys were involved!!
I AM THANKFUL THAT I AM PAST SANTA CLAUS!!! I am ashamed to say....
I had tears a couple of Christmases trying to find that last hot toy!!
Happy Thanksgiving :-)
Very talented and to the point.. love it.. Betty Ann
"...how else will she purchase her kids love on Christmas?"
So sad, but unfortunately too true in too many homes.
No matter what I choose to do to prepare for Christmas, I ALWAYS know what it is really all about and I keep that sacred.
Thanks for this wonderful 55 reminder.
PG
I wouldn't go shopping today on a lost bet...
That's a zinger! People espousing to have a loving spirit running over each other to get to the things they want to buy no matter what so they can buy kids or others love. Wow.
such choas...why? love this 55. I'm stayin home today! :D
That was good!
I wouldn't go near a store today! I prefer to stay in, flop on the couch and eat leftovers! :)
Perfect summing up of the havoc that is Black Friday. I should know, in college I worked Black Friday two years in a toy store! Thanks for visiting mine :)
Nicely cynical, much like this season is becoming....Well done and thanks for stopping by!
I love shopping! But not during this time of the year! It gets crazy! I have a short family so I don't have to buy much, I'm soo glad!
Great story.
Nooooooooooooooo . . I'm supposed to be doing my Christmas shopping today but I'm sitting here in front of the computer instead. I can't stand shopping. Our Black Friday equivalent is probably the Boxing Day sales but nowhere near as mad as yours.
That's awesome! I love it! Exactly why I don't do Black Friday shopping!
Good job, Brian.
As for the folks that stand in line and lose themselves over a toy for their child, I just don't get it. That's not what the season is about in my opinion.
And THAT, my friend, is why I skip the sales on Black Friday!
That reminds me that someone was trampled to death last year on Black Friday...at Wal-Mart, I believe.
Dragons never give the kids toys at Christmas. We give those on hatch day.
Good 55
This is wonderful. I read this and KNOW how glad I am not to have to face the town centre this year. I'll make all the presents myself (Except for my daughters)
ronda, it was a walmart...every one seems a little tamer this year according tot he news so maybe that sobered people up a bit?
yeah, I was out with the crazies this morning.
It was like going to battle. I lost.
Great one, never knew about this. Its always good to steer clear when there's too much of a crowd.
Perfect 55 for Black Friday.
Boy you hit the nail on the head with this one. I stay away from the stores on Black Friday :) Have a great weekend :)
Awesome 55 Brian.
Hope your turkey was good.
Which is why I stay home that day! Quite the description!
Timely. And topical. You're always thought-provoking, aren't you?
-smarmoofus
I love it! And it explains why I avoid going out on Black Friday... ;)
I haven't experienced Black Friday and I don't want to - you paint a very graphic picture!
What a great idea, and a wonderful 55!
OMG . . . Did you do any shopping on Black Friday? CHAOS I TELL YOU, CHAOS! LoL!
Dear Author www.waystationone.com !
