bithday dreams

you are more like me
than your brother,
choosing to live in your fantasy world,
between your ears,
dancing through the living room,
the last action hero,
cape trailing in your wake,
battling the forces of evil
that lurk behind every chair.

you are more like me
than your brother,
content to live between the pages
of books, drawn deep
into their stories
only to find yourself
clinging tight to the rail of a ship,
skipping across the starlit sky,
en route to Neverland.

you are more like me
than your brother,
at that age,
seven.

Yesterday, Logan turned seven and brought to a close our mad cap dash through 10 days of birthdays. He is definitely our artist and dreamer. He has an amazing heart as well. Just the other day he came home with a note from the teacher that he was talking too much in class.

But they were asking for my help! Why do I get in trouble for helping people?

I didn't know if I needed to send him to his room, or fix him a bowl of ice cream.

Happy birthday buddy!

Happy Birthday Logan! Awww, I know how he feels - I used to get in trouble all the time for helping people too. Finally, they moved my desk to the hallway, but then I made friends with the janitor. They then realized it was better to embrace my "abilities" than to try and silence me.

That's one long celebration, heh, heh. I did that a lot, when I was a kid( and still do ). Nothing wrong with trying to help out. I say more ice cream :)

Happy Birthday to the talker! And give him some ice cream. It could be so much worse. Besides, the number one trait of teachers is that they like to talk.

I say ice cream for that kind heart.

I vote for giving him ice cream, too! :)

What a great kid with a sensitive and caring heart....
If I remember correctly, many famous, successful people were rabble-rousers (spelling?) and didn't follow the rules.
Go Logan!!!! (and Happy Birthday!)

What a great post! He sounds like an amazing kid with a great heart! Give him the ice cream. I too got in trouble for talking too much in class, then one day just decided I wouldn't talk anymore. It is hard to be pulled back out of that shell when you go inside. Kids are kids, they're gonna talk. Let them be little, they will all too soon grow up and then we wish they would talk to us more!!!

Throw birthday greetings from Casa Hice on top of the heap, please! Seven is a fine age!

And I'm voting for ice cream too.

Fix him a bowl of ice cream. Fix one for yourself too for being a wonderful, loving, expressive daddy. Blessing to you.

so cute that he was helping....so confusing that he got a note for helping out. Maybe you can teach him sign language ;)

Happy Birthday to a wonderful boy.;) I wish I had a birthday celebration that lasted 10 days when I was a little girl.;) No wonder he is a great kid when he is surrounded by so much attention and love.

He probably has a lot to say, and will say it anyway. Why should that get anyone in trouble, more so at seven? :-)

Happy Birthday to Logan.

Ice cream, definitely. No good punishing a child twice! Teacher needs to deal with things in school, not send notes home.

Happy Birthday, Logan x

Sweets for the sweet boy! My youngest was a talker (still is). At seven she took over the classroom and was known to tell the teacher what she should do! I was PTA president that year and overheard my child calmly explain to her teacher that if she wanted "those" boys to quit talking to each other she should seperate them. I stood at the door of the classroom and watched as my daughter actually drew out the seating plan for the class and then implemented it by telling each child what to do with their desk. She is 31 now and is still a force to be reckoned with! Happy Birthday to Logan, don't stop helping others and have an extra scoop of ice cream!

Happy Birthday to your adorable son. I can relate - I was always with my head in a book. I still have to have at least one going. Although the blog world has taken its toll lately.

You have to help your child get along in school and respect the rules of the institution and respect the authority of the teachers and administrators, without losing his sense of caring and sharing with classmates. Knowing you, you explained all that over the dish of ice cream, huh.
