i want to be an artist...
capturing with my brush
breath that's lost
in the first blush of pink
when sun kisses sky
on crisp autumn morns.
i want to be an artist...
watching flakes fall
passed my hammer and chisel
exposing smooth contours
of the body contained
in the walls of a stone.
i want to be an artist...
releasing the emotion
hidden in melody
as creation bleeds
from my fingers
across heart strings.
i want to be an artist...
understanding there will be
slashed canvases, broken
pieces and unfinished songs
between the masterpieces.
teach me to be an artist.

Beautiful, Brian....just beautiful....captured to perfection. I love it....
Teach you to be an artist? OMG, you, my friend, already are an artist....your brush is your pen (keyboard) and your lyrics, the prose you put to paper (blog)...no teaching necessary....I bow to thee!
:o)
S
you already are....to all our delight! wonderful! Absolutely!
I have always admired people who can paint, sculpt, compose. Each medium is different, each creative. Some pieces of art or music blow my mind! You paint us beautiful pictures with your words Brian- I can see so many paintings in your first stanza! Yes, you are already an artist :)
I wonder if an artist can also write such beautiful poetry. A poet is an artist and that you already are.
I know it's already been said but it's the first thought that came to my mind...
You Are An Artist :)
xoxo
Wow... Lasting impressions...
My Travelogue
Umm, I hate to be redundant, but, YOU ARE !!!!!!!! lol!
Dude - you're an artist.
That's gorgeous.
In my eyes, you have the mindset of an artist for sure.
:)
Brian, you are an artist. Your brush is verbal rather than literal. I want to be an artist too ... paint the kid's bedrooms . .go to town on the walls . .
I like the end, made me think of a little kid, sitting in the midst of a huge mess, holding up his final, prized creation.
:)
Others have already said it, but an artist can be someone without talent for song, or painting, or sculpture. It can be someone with talent for making others see the beauty in the reality just beyond their perception. Sound familiar Mr. I-to-be-an-artist?
wordsmith=artist :^)
@wings - exactly. its the failure along the way that i struggle with at times. wanting it all to fall right in to place. failure is necessary...painful, but necessary. in art, in writing, in blogging, in life, in love, in...
@baino - lol. paint the town brilliantly!
be back in a bit to reply to the rest!
Well drawn! -J
You are an artist! You just use a pen for words instead of a brush for strokes! :)
Ooops...and just before I click on 'post comment' I see that every one else agrees with me! See!?
You are already an artist. How else do you think you can express your thoughts so well? Great rhythm and very vivid expressions! I loved this one.
Please take a look at my creative side and let me know what you think of them. I'll be waiting for your comments.

The vote appears to be unanimous Brian! Your readers are fully in agreement re: the question of your artist status. ; )
Lovely.
this is outstanding. i wish this too....
I looked up artist in the dictionary and there I found a photo of you.
I wish it was as easy as being "taught" to be an artist. If it were, I would be famous and so would you.
Great post!
I think you are already an artist........
Look at that poem! great!
what a beautiful canvas you just painted with your words, ARTIST, Know thyself...
Brian, well done! Well done, indeed!
You are an artist dear friend. Your canvas is the blank page and your words are the paint. :)
Nice piece Brian. The agony and the ecstasy indeed.
Did you write this B? It is awesome. :) Love it.. I might just have to put this on my blog and give you credit. What do you think?
;0)
I couldn't have put it better myself - or even half as good. And I'm not even an artist. Great post!
PS Thank you for the comment!
Years ago I tried painting with oil paints. My then father-in-law bought all the things I needed and he would sit with me and we would both work at our separate easels. He passed away not long after his son and I divorced. Since then I have learned that there are so many types of artist. You have shown us all how much of the artist is in you in each post on your blog.
It has all been said.... and quite eloquently at that.
Lovely poem, Brian. I wonder why you didn't include writing among the arts? ;-)
There is something about your poetry... it grabs me.
Thank you for it.

Wow! This is a great piece. Thank you for sharing!
I agree with all the other posts who have said you already ARE an artist. I wish I could put into words how I feel. Instead, I draw or paint. I wish I could sculpt like Michelangelo... but the lesson for today... is that EVERYONE has something they excel in! My friend... you would be always welcome at our "Secret Meetings", where the artists and writers will soon TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! Bwahhahaha. ;)
You already are. You weave a tapestry of words that no one else does in quite the same way. It is just a different art.
A more difficult one...
oh but you are an artist I saw everything you just painted!
wow!
Yes it must be marvellous to be able to capture life and its emotions and express it in a way that reaches out to others.
But you already have that skill
I agree with all of the previous comments ~ and wish you could teach me to write and create as you do!
Ah but you are! an artist of words that fill one with hope and wisdom and fulfillment!
This is beautiful Brian!Yes you are!:)
I nearly missed this one. I'm so glad I checked back. This is certainly proof that you are indeed an artist and a very, very special one at that.
Hi! Brian,
Wow, your poem has captured all the essence of what it means to be an artist...and being an artist,
I wish that I can post this poem on my blog.
Only with your permission, but of course and link back to your blog.If not,I will stop by and read it once a week...Just kidding!
Thanks, for sharing!
DeeDee ;-D
but u already are my friend ^o^
You are the art teacher to all students who enter this classroom of your heart and mind. Heartspell
some artists are self taught,
I guess that you are one of them...
perfect poem!
stunning images your words create!
Nice work. The third part is my favorite.

i have no delusions that i am perfect...smiles.
Exquisite Brian, you are an artist.
Exquisite Brian, you are an artist.
yeah that captures it - never thrown a canvas but have picked up the pieces of a mess when I throw clay
It was done magnificently
This is very deep. I also like your style. :)
I agree with everyone else, you are an artist with words. But, I also understand that longing, the itch in the fingers and hands to render what you see into a painted canvas vision. It is hard to acknowledge that talents lie elsewhere, and that the itch can never be fully realized. But, I also believe that if you have the time and the will, it is never too late to realize the vision. Good luck (and meantime, enjoy the word pictures you create)!
very well done... enjoy the quest! but then, you don't need to go far because you are already there... an exquisite artist!
this is a very nice piece!!! thanks for sharing!
here from Jingles!
Perfection. :)
I think this is one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read. I love the words and topic. Great job!
...as creation bleeds
from my fingers
across heart strings....
