Soft gentle steps stir the fallen leaves, ears twitching she pokes her head into the sun dappled clearing to stand stoically in its brilliance, white tail at attention. Scampering down the rough bark, a grey squirrel turns its curious head, chittering in anticipation at the growing throng of animals. Limbs bend slightly supporting their friends, sparrow and blue bird, adding their voice to the revelry.
Smiles break in a wave amid the chorus of their voices as the badge is pinned upon their new friend's chest, to serve and protect as a Junior Ranger.

@sandi - its a program put on by the park service to teach kids about the environment and conservation...pretty cool. although he was disappointed he never got to see the bear that is roaming the mountain right now...just traces of him.
@Tom - its my refuge, so i am glad it is contageous.
@madame - i was not. not sure if they had the program back then, but i got my education about nature from all the camping trips with my fam.
@willow - taking his responsibilities seriously...lol. yeah i love the proverb as well and seemed fitting...

@jen - yeah, its amazing the kids i come across that don't know the first thing about the woods or great outdoors. he had a blast. first camp experience and it went well.

That is a great proverb! When I first saw the photo, I thought,"Oh that poor boy got lost and the Rangers were helping him! Thank God for text!!!

Junior Ranger....that sounds so cool. How did he get this honor? What does it mean for him? does he get special responsibilities now? Is it a general title or specific to a park?

I wonder if there was such a thing as Junior Ranger when I was a kid. Probably not. What a concept to encourage young people to enjoy and protect their natural environment and inhabitants.

OK my ignorance is showing. What's a Junior Ranger? Is that like a boy scout? If so, he'll have a blast I'm sure. Both my brother's learned a lot in the scouts (not always good but they can light a fire and blow stuff up!)
