My alma mater, Radford University, just had their first ever Illumination ceremony, where they lit the campus with Christmas lights. Reaction seemed rather weak as it was attended by only 75 people, of which about 20 were staff. One of the few students represented commented, “I think its ridiculous that we stood out in the cold just to flip a light switch.”Thing is, when you first "cut the lights on" it can seem rather anti climatic. When you take that first trembling step out of your comfort zone to bring light into the darkness it may seem like it makes little difference. People watching may have the same reaction as the student, "Why are you even doing this?" We can begin to feel that one person won't make a difference. One light gets drowned in the shadows. But it all has to begin with one person believing it does make a difference.
You don't have to go far, there are probably people in your neighborhood, whose light is about to go out. Who will you illuminate this holiday season?

I love the words by Bono. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed in a crowd, so small and insignificant, so impotent. What could I possibly do that could make a difference or change someone's mind or spirit? When I begin to think like this, I need to remember that I don't have to understand, at least I don't have to understand fully. God will use me as I am needed. I am sure that I have an impact in many lives that I never even know that I have influenced. Blessings my friend.
Bono quotes are great.
yeah nice challenge to be the light. There is always the cynic like in NL Christmas Vacation-"one of the lights is not twinkling..."So even if it seems there is enough light shining, there is always room for more. Each of us must do our part, rather than passing blame on the reality of darkness.
great post.. definitely something to think about this holiday season. also reminded me of last week, hanging out with a random posse of friends & trying to find something to do... and someone mentioned thinking the tree-lighting was happening @ City Center, so we relocated to no avail. it's definitely not happening til tomorrow haha
One of my favorite quotes by bono for sure! Well done sir. ;) When are we having our U2 party by the way?
U2 party must come soon! Seen "Under a Blood Red Sky" yet?
